Remington VLS or Ruger KM77VT
« on: January 23, 2006, 10:21:09 AM »
I need your help!!!  I have finally saved enough money to get a new 223 varmint rifle the end of this month and can't decide between the Remington VLS and Ruger MK II Target.  Both weight about the same and both have laminate stocks and 26" barrels.  Which one would you choose and why?  Anyone had any problems with either of these rifles?  Thanks for your help.

panhandlepr,
I am an unabashed Remmy fan.
If I were you, I would handle both and buy the one I liked the most.
It's very likely that either will shoot quite accurately and last a lifetime.

I have both, a M700VLS in .260 and the Ruger M77 VT in .243.  Get the Remington - mine is superior to the Ruger in every way except the stock.  That Ruger stock is wonderful, but it does not outweigh the accuracy and quality issues I had with the Ruger.  The lightweight barrel on the Ruger is another issue, particularly if you want an accurate rifle which doesn't get hot as quickly, and which is heavy enough to ride the bags well.

After lots of bedding and metal issues the M77 was very picky about its loads.  It shot the 55-grain Noslers pretty well, but not as well as the M700 shot about every decent load I tried.  The aftermarket supports the Remington too, not that much for the M77s.

I have the Ruger VT in 223 and I really like mine. It shoots 1/2" 5 shot groups with 50gr V-Max. It also has a two stage target trigger and comes with scope rings.

My Ruger VT in .22-250 has put 4 shots into 0.5".  At 200 yards.

I have also owned both. The Remington in .243 and the Ruger in .308. I liked them both and wish I had kept both!! The stock is better on the Ruger. That beaver-tail front is nice and steady on a sandbag. But the Remington will probably be more accurate. I kind of liked the Rugers two stage trigger but the Remingtons will be more adjustable without spending more money. Go with the Remington. All in all its a better gun.   Sean

Have, and still own several of each( not these perticular models) Rem and rugers. I have had a lot better out of the box luck with the rugers. Both will shoot if you handload. IMO they are both good rifles and would get the one that fits me (opps you) better. wish they made a "Ruginton Rifle"

I have a Remington VLS in 6mm Rem., and it's a real sweetheart in the accuracy department;  prints most loads in the .4"s.  Ruger is making their own barrels now so that may have improved them considerably.  With all the emphasis being on the bottom line now you're taking a chance either way.  Just one mans opinion.  Best wishes.
