Anyone make .17 HMR in a semi auto (besides Volquatrsen)?
« on: January 15, 2004, 04:49:29 AM »
Are there any out there?  Tom Volquartsen makes a really nice system, but it is outta my $$$ range.
Or else I am ponderin' on gettin' one built on a 10/22 type action.  Possible?

Mustang Gregg,

The Remington Model 597M is available in .17HMR.  Go to http://www.remington.com/firearms/rimfire/597_magnum_17hmr.htm and check them out.  Lawdog

I've got the Remington 597 LS in 17 HMR. I bought an extra barrel in 22 Mag and have both rimfire magnums in one rifle. MI VHNTR

where did you get the 22 mag barrel for your 597, are they easy to change over and how much did it cost you?

I bought a take off 597 22 Mag barrel from here:
http://rimfirecentral.com/forums/index.php
There are also aftermarket barrels available for the 597 Mag. IIRC, the barrel was under $50 shipped to me. The barrel swap is very simple and straight forward. It only takes a few minutes to do. There are no other changes needed to swap to/from either magnum caliber, other than the barrel. MI VHNTR

Called Ruger
« Reply #6 on: January 18, 2004, 12:09:32 PM »
I called 'em a coupla weeks back.  They told me that they were not gonna build a .17 HMR on a 10/22 mag action.  The Ruger website didn't show anything coming up either.  I may havta opt for the Remington.

'course my brother & I built a heavy barrelled 10/22 back in 1980 & wrote Ruger askin' them to build some.  They said it would NEVER sell!!  HMMMMM????

You can simply take a Ruger 10/22 mag and switch the barrel out to make your own semi-auto .17 HMR Mag. Lot's of people have done it and it works perfectly. I believe that you can get a drop in barrel from Green Mountain Barrels.

Check out www.clarkcustomguns.com They make one too, but almost as expensive as the Volquartsen.

Butler Creek is now offering a 17HMR bull barrel to go on a Ruger 10/22magnum.  I have one on order.  I'll let everyone know how it shoots and functions when I get the chance to try it out.

I got the Butler Creek barrel.  Actually, I ordered 2, one for me and one for a friend.  Mine functions well and shoots a 1" group at 100 yards.  My friends gun would misfire about every fourth shot, but it shot good groups like mine.   He called Butler Creek and they told him to send it back for a new one and that they would even re-imburse him his return shipping.  So far, I'm pleased with mine.

See my last post above.  My buddy got his back and re-installed it on his rifle.  It shoots and functions just like mine does now.

Check out the Accelerator Rifle here: http://www.excelarms.com/pages/3/index.htm

They are also going to produce a pistol.

Send them an email and request the brochure: info@excelarms.com

There is a thread about this here: http://rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53106
