Can buy a new .243 and have about $400 to spend. Which is the better gun for the money?

I would go with the Remington. I don't own a 243 but have alot of other calibers in Remington. Remingtons been good to me.

I had the same choices to make, my Vanguard should be in the mail as I write this. I also looked at the Savage rifles.

If you are looking at value, I believe the Vanguard is the better buy if compared to the SPS. The Vanguard has the fluted bolt w/ gas ports and better extractor than the SPS. In addition, the Vanguard comes w/ the factory accuracy guarantee.

Sorry, I would definately go with the Remington SPS. I have the 7-08 and it is a shooter. I have loaded 150 NBT, 160 SGK, 120 Hornady SP, and 139 Hornady. All but the 139 Hornady shot at an inch or less. This is my personal experience, maybe I have a fluke rifle, but I doubt it.

The Vanguard, in my opinion, handles very well, but I have never shot one. Common complaints that I have heard are poor bedding and poor accuracy. Yeah, they guarantee 1.5 MOA. So what? I bet any of the budget rifles will do that. If you are set on the Vanguard then just buy the Howa for $50 less and skip the Weatherby name on it.

I'm not against the remingtons or the savages,but i've never owned either.....I have squeezed an accu-trigger and it was SWEET...ALMOST as sweet as a Tikka's,except the Tikka doesn't need the middle trigger "safety device".....just my $.02

One more for the Vanguard. I've had very good luck with mine in 300WSM, so much so that I'm wanting to order another one in 223. As soon as I finish scraping the last 12.5K pennies together!

REmington has gone to crap over the last 5 years!! I bought a Vangard in 243. 3 weeks ago and love it. Don't buy yours from Walmart. They put a cheeper stock on it than normal or at least on the magnum calibers. Sean

Held both in my hand yesterday at lunch. Worked the actions, shouldered the rifles, worked the safetys, looked them over pretty good. SPS (asking price $485) Vanguard (asking price $450). I'd pick the Vanguard.

i bought a stainless .243 SPS for $469 and my blued Vanguard was only $389.

Yes they were both stainless. Those rifles are in a shop known for their high prices.

I looked at both a couple of months ago and liked the Remington as it was lighter and handled better for me. It also turned out to be a MOA shooter.

I recently bought a Vanguard stainless in .270. There is an advantage to the Vanguard in that they are shipped with a 3 shot, 100 yard group so you know what the rifle is capable of out of the box. I like accurate rifles, regardless of the make, and the Vanguard I found is accurate. Both rifles have triggers that will need work to be light and crisp. Both have 24 inch barrels for higher velocity. The Remington is lighter but I liked the way the Vanguard handled and fit me. If you shop around, you may be able to find a Vanguard stainless for less than the Remington in regular steel. I did. Weatherby started creaming off sub MOA rifles last year and charging more for them but there are still some out there that were distributed before the MOA model came out.

Very, very true. However, keep in mind that the new Weatherby Sub Moa Vanguards are more than just cream of the crop barrelled actions. Specifically, the new Sub Moa rifles come with a real synthetic stock which, on average, would cost you over $200 anyway. In addition, these stocks also aid in better accuracy. I'm not sure if the new Sub MOAs are also glass bedded, but if they are, then that cost should also be considered in the higher price. As such, when you consider the extra money that goes into the new Sub MOAs, I believe that the cost is justified. I think that if anyone buys a new regular vanguard and customizes it by replacing the junky stock and getting it glass bedded, then it too will, or at the very least should, yield better accuracy.

Zachary is right about the upgrades - the MOA model has a better stock and better fit and finish. However, I'm sure the MOA won't meet your $400 spending limit.

The MOA model is somewhere in the area of $730. They shoot every rifle and the ones which show tiny groups are given a pillar-bedded stock and etc and so the higher price.

keep in mind that the worst it's going to shoot is one and a half inches, that's the guarantee.
