I did something VERY dumb last night  . Is there any way I can still hunt in Canada after getting an operating while intoxicated ticket? If not, I guess I've got 2 years of hunts to cancel. Man I'm an idiot!

If you were driving a motor vehicle, that same ticket  is considered a felony here in canada and would disqualify you from entry to canada.

You must get a waiver from the government.  It's expensive, and I believe it must be renewed.  2 people in our usual group of fisherman in June have DUIs and they have a little trouble every year, but as long as their paperwork is in order they still get to go.

You cannot get a waiver if the conviction is fresh. usually only given for older offenses, say 3-10 years. Be warned... even with a waiver, I've seen people turned away. It's totally at the discression of the immigration officer.

A few years ago a number of wildland fire engines were sent to assist with fires in Western Canada.  One of the fighters on an engine crew had a DUI.  They would not allow him into Canada.  The engine with crew was sent back to it's station.  I guess getting an exception is tough.  I sure would not have wanted to be him.  Those guys live to fight fire and if somebody messes things up they do pay a price.  Maybe a career killer!

Guess I gotta break my Dad's heart and tell him next year's moose hunt is off   It serves me right, I just wish I hadn't screwed it up for him.

before you do anything drastic:

1) talk to a good lawyer who handles DUIs.  NOT A FAMILY ATTORNEY!
2) talk to someone with Canada's Border Agency, and find out what the exact rules are.

I'm confused - How will the border people know if someone has a DUI ?? They don't run a check on everyone who crosses.

No, they don't check everyone, But each time I've crossed to hunt; they did run a check on us while we were registering our guns. I don't want to put down $2000 non-refundable on a moose hunt and then be denied at the border. Also I've been dealing with a guy about buying his bear/moose hunting operation.  I'd be crossing the border ALOT then. I hope I don't have to throw it all away.

Depending on your state laws and the quality of your lawyer you can often get your charges reduced or even dropped.  There is absolutely no reason not to talk to someone who is an expert in DUIs.  When you meet with them take the actual rule the Canadians use.

I suspect if you put forth the effort you could get this taken care of.

the key is getting it cleared up if possible BEFORE you try to cross the border. once you try, your conviction is flagged in the database. no they don't check everyone, but would you like to roll the dice when you've already told them you have never been arrested, and they decide to check it?

I've got an appointment with the lawyer tomarrow, he sounded hopeful over the phone. If anyone thinks I'm using a lawyer to get out of it, believe me it would be alot cheaper to just plead guilty; I just won't give up on Canada that easily.

You should be thankful you didn't hurt anyone = that's when the money and guilt become real factors.
