Enough Powder
« on: November 29, 2005, 08:58:34 PM »
I am shooting 460 grain No Excuses bullets with 60 grains of 777 powder and wadding by Junior Doughty (very cheap cost, good quality and shipping compared to T/C) . Getting acceptable accuracy (1" to 2" groups at 50 yds with open sights). Shots to be under 100 yds but probably closer to 50 due to heavy cover. My hunting buddy says I am too light for deer due to the heavy cover even that close and should opt for 70-80 grains of 777. I went to the 60 grains because I do not flinch at the range with that load. When you are hunkered down on top of the gun on a bench, the recoil sure gets felt. Should I go with a heavier load for the range I am restricting my shooting too. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Its been my experence, with muzzelloading that these guns will shoot most any bullet well if the right powder charge is used.
When i try to devolope a load, with whatever bullet i choose...I start with a really light load....say 50grains and work up....till I find that (sweet spot)

In my case I shoot 80grains pyrodex under a 300gran hornady XTP w/a tridations sabot.....Which my friends tell me is too light?

I've taken six deer with this load.....all complete pass throughs....I have yet to recover a bullet.
The last one was a straight front end shot The bullet hit the deer in the center of the chest,...traveled the whole lenth and exited the hind quater breaking its hind leg.
It dont get much better than that for penatration!!

IF you are gettin the kind of accuracy you need, then my opion would that 60grains is plenty to take any deer out to 100yards.

Also I dout adding powder will help you shoot through brush.
even the smallest twig will deflect a bullet no matter how much powder you put behind it.

Dump the 777 and try a different powder. I shoot heavy conicals with 90 grains of Pyrodex, Clearshot (no longer made), or American Pioneer. I get a shove while firing. 70 grains of 777 has a sharper more painfull kick than any of the others shooting 90 grains. 90 grains of 777 rattles my teeth. 777, in my oppinion, just kicks harder than other BP substitutes, it has an abrupt rapid recoil and not a shove or push.

I have had a tendency to flinch when shooting . I have found 90 grains of 777 pushing 240 gr TC sabot pretty smooth .

Hey guys, just a thought, if you read the canister and instructions with 777 you are supposed to reduce the load used by appx 10-15% to equal the velocity of Pyrodex or BP. I use 777 now instead of Pyrodex. With 777 I get the same velocity as Pyrodex with less powder, great accuracy, and easy clean up. It don't get much better than that!!!....<><....
