trouble with breech plug
« on: November 07, 2005, 02:21:42 PM »
Hello all,

I have a huntsman and the breech plug has been a bear to get out of the gun.  Has anyone left theirs in the gun full time?  I have used Anti-Seize and the breech plug has come out easier but on occasion the breech will be difficult to keep closed.  Does anyone have any suggestions for me.  The gun shoots well with 90 grains of powder and 295 gr bullets so I am enjoying the shooting.

Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick,
I've been shooting a Huntsman a long time and this is what I've learned.  (I figure these apply to any break open or in-line muzzleloader).  I use the permatex anti seize compound on the threads.  Coat threads all around, top to bottom.  Tighten hand tight, using tool, then barely snug with a screwdriver through the holes.  At the range, after each second shot, I crack the threads and re-sung. I never have a problem removing the plug anymore.  I don't quite understand what you mean when you say the breech will be difficult to keep closed.  The only time I had a problem the gun breaking open was when I wasn't changing the orange primer carrier enough.  They looked o.k. but must have been out of tolerance or something.  Now I change the carrier after every 10 shots or so.  I wipe it off after every shot before inserting a new primer and wipe out the breech before putting the carrier in.  This has solved the break open problem.  You can also do a search on breech plug tools on this forum and find numerous ways to make a stouter, easier to use breech plug tool.  Good luck, Ambush

:D Like Ambushhunter, stated always undue the breech plug after every third shot., only finger tighten and use a good lube on the threads.

I didn't think about the orange disc.  I have rarely changed it.

I appreciate your reply

The only time I had a problem with the breech plug was when I used the TC pink teflon tape . the tape didn't let me close the action well enough and it would break open . Not any more .I switched to using Tetra Grease and problem gone .
