FL vs. Neck size Encore
« on: March 07, 2003, 08:27:08 AM »
I have seen it posted here (I think) that best way to achieve good  and consistent accuracy with factory encore barrels it to full length size the cases.  Why is this?  I have had good results with only neck sizing cases on a 25/06 factory encore barrel.  Thanks.

stratocaster,
There are many of us who seldom if ever full length size for our single shots. The few who have problems are in my opinion firing rounds that are over-pressure in their firearms. Brass is elastic within its design limits and should need no more than an occasional trim (and maybe not even that) so long as pressure remain in the acceptable limits for any particular weapon.
This is not meant as a flame directed at or to anyone. The physics say that the brass will expand to fill the chamber and contract when the pressure drops as long as the chamber isn't expanding with the brass. If the chamber is expanding enough that the brass won't fit then there us too much pressure for that weapon - regardless of what the manual or program in use might say. If you load within the elastic limits of the brass full length resizing is unnecessary.

Paul is about right.  If you are using something that pushes the pressure envelope you will probaaly have to FL.  Don Bowers told me that he likes to bump the shoulder back .001.  The Encore/Contender design allows frame stretch, one of the reasons they are just not as accurate as bolt guns.  You can close the action on a E/C and "cram" a long case into the gun, but you are pre-stressing the action and that cartridge will not hit the same hole as a catridge that is the right length.  I use a FL die and try to get the head space the same on every cartridge, 0 to .002.  If the HS is OK, they only get neck sized.  Keep in mind I am  talking about trying to put them all in one hole and the little things make a difference.
