i had a 480 ruger rb and a got rid of it about a year ago.i have been looking for one for several months.i found one last week that has a 5 inch bbl.my last one had an 8 inch bbl.is the loss of velocity or energy going to be significant.i want to use this for deer and pigs.will the 5 inch bbl be ok? any feedback will be greatly appreciated,.....jim :shock:

In a .480 for deer and pigs, 5" is plenty.  A buddy of mine has the 6.5" and it does just fine, that 1.5" less isn't gonna do a whole lot.

The 5" version will be fine, the velocity loss will be miniscule. Personally I would hold out for the longer barrel for a better sight radius, especially since you will be hunting hogs. I wouldnt want to misplace a shot on one , then have to go find it in the bush.... :D
