Remington Model 7 SS 7MM-08
« on: December 22, 2005, 02:45:46 AM »
Hello All,

I am seriously considering this rifle.  I hunt in Pennyslvania and am tired of carryinging my 700 BDL around all the time.

My only concern is the barrel.  What type of accuracy can I expect from the 20" barrel?  I have killed 30+ deer and have never taken a shot past 125 yards.  Just don't have the open areas where I hunt.  Will this gun reach out reliably at that distance?  My BDLs have 22" and 24" barrels.  Will this amount to a big difference.

One of my sons has been using this rifle for a several years.  Accuracy is typically .75 MOA and he has taken antelope at 250 yards and whitetail also.  Yep, the barrel is 20" and is on the thin side.  But he has had nothing but good luck with it . . . after a trigger job.

When I think of 7mm-08, for some reason I think of the Remington Model 7 Stainless Synthetic.  Odd as that may be, although I own 3 rifles that are chambered in 7mm-08, none of them are the Remington Model 7. :)

I guess that the primary reason that I don't own a Model 7 (at least yet) is because I am not a fan of 20" barrels.  Rather, I prefer at least 22" on standard cartridges, and actually really prefer 24" on standard, and 26" on magnums.  In real world hunting, however, a short action cartridge like the 7mm-08 will not be a crippled performer from a 20" barrel - at least not at that ranges of which you speak - i.e. 125 yards.

Muzzle blast will be a bit more out of a 20" barrel than a 22" and 24" but, given that the 7mm-08 is a standard short action cartridge, the blast will not be a noticeable or sever as, say, a long action or magnum cartridge.

You simply have to weigh the pros and cons.  Given that you shoot PA whitetails (which can be quite large compared to, say, South Texas standards), but shoot within about 150 yards, AND you are looking for a lighter rifle, then the Model 7 would be a good choice.

Another excellent choice would be a Kimber Montana M84.  You can get a 7mm-08 in Stainless Synthetic, with a 22" barrel, and it should weight about the same, if not less, than the Model 7.  Another thing to consider is that the stock is smaller on the Model 7 than the Kimber.  As such, if you want a longer rifle that will still be light, then the Kimber may be your best bet.

I would suggest that you try both on for size.  The Kimber is definately more expensive, but it is a better rifle.

I have one of these and love it.  I had always had the model 7 243 for a back up whitetail rifle.  Everyone in my family harvested deer with that little rifle.  You can carry it all day and it handles like a dream from a tree stand.  I just sold my 243 model 7 and bought a 7mm08 model 7.  I was always a little concerned that a .243 was just enough for whitetails.  I harvested my first whitetail Sunday with this little rifle.  I had a 75 yard shot and used 139 gr Hornady soft point I had rolled myself.  I was pleased with nice sized entrance and exit wound.  It was our late season doe season.  Very large doe went about 15 yards after the shot and piled up.  I also stopped a coyote last week with the same rifle, 168 yards, never knew what hit him.   My first model 7 had 18 1/2 inch barrel.  Of course, the newer ones have a 20 inch barrel.  By the way, it seems to shoot most loads I have tried around a inch or less.  Go get one and get in the woods.  Merry Christmas.

I have the older Model 7 with the 18.5" barrel in 7-08.  My son used it to take our longest shot on a deer.  A big mulie at 284 long steps.  It was loaded with either a 140gr NP or a 145gr Grand Slam in front of some H4895.  A one shot kill with never a doubt.  At the shot, the deer did that side-wise stagger for about 10 feet and then fell over.
While SS rifles are not to my taste, the 7-08 certainly is.

My Model 7, 7-08 stainless synthetic shot a solid 8" pattern at 100 yards.  Reworked, reworked, reworked.  Got it down to a solid 7.75" pattern.
Whatever doesn't kill you will make you stronger.  Right up until it kills you.

8 inch pattern from a rifle?  Heck, I have a shot gun that shoots a tighter pattern than that. :)

Seriously though, rather than reworking the rifle several times, I would have sent it back to Remington immediately.  Even they should have recognized that 8" groups are out of spec.

I had a model 7 in 7mm08 and loved that gun but like a fool i sold it ,now i have a ADL in 7mm08 with 22 inch barrel ,very good whitetail round. Model 7 is a great little gun may have to have one more myself. The 20 inch barrel is not a worry .
I enjoy collecting guns, swaping and staying up on all the newest models. I deer, quail, squirrel and rabbit hunt.

Don't think you'll notice a difference in MB or db        Velocity is likely about 30' less than from a 22" with that cartridge.     Longer barrels=more velocity NOT better accuracy.  Hunt with the barrel length that meets your needs as you see them.

I picked mine up on Christmas eve.  Got the Stainless Synthetic but it was a reall toss up let me tell you.  The laminate wood was just as nice.

Scope getting mounted today.  Pick it up tonight.

Thanks

I have the same rifle in .260.   I shoot 140 grain Corelokts and have had very good results over the past 5 years.    I love the rifle for walking/stalking.  I bought mine for hog hunting where shots are close and many times moving.    You will need a trigger job, but that is no big deal.
I would like a slightly longer barrel for balance and less muzzle blast, but the gun shoots too well to alter.
What scope did you choose?    Mine wears a leupy 3 x 9.

I have various scope magnification ranges on my 7mm-08s.  My Tikka WH Stainless wears an Elite 4200 2.5x-10x-40mm, which is probably perfect for the 7mm-08s (as would be a similar 3x-9x-40mm).  My Sako 75 Stainless wears a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5x-10x-50mm Illuminated.  And I think that my Remington BDL SS DM wears the same scope.

Zachary has the right idea.  I bought the gun he talks of, the 84M in 7mm-08.  Great gun for any sort of hunting.  Couple times I got to my stand and thought "Did I forget the gun at camp?  ... Oh yeah, its right here on my shoulder"  it's THAT LIGHT.  To go along with the light rifle, I went with the Leupold VX-III 2.5x8 I think it was  - something fairly lower power like that.  When you get into the 3.5x10's and such, the scope gets larger and heavier.  In any case, the 7mm-08 is a great cartridge and put down a buck just fine for me this year.  Very managable recoil as well.  Best of luck  :D
