WINCHESTER stainless 375 h&h
« on: December 21, 2005, 01:53:28 PM »
Well, I think I know what Im getting for this x-max, I found a big-long winchester box hidden in the basement, I opened it, and behold, it was a winchester stainless chaimbered 375 h&h (I am the only who does any hunting in my entire family, i think this rifle is for me)

I know nothing about the big-ol bores, shoo, Im afraid of their recoil lol, Im only 5'11 165 lbs.  However, I am very interested in going Buffalo / bison hunting sometime next summer, would this caliber work for such large animal ?  I did some readin about it and it seems to be a good caliber for big bears / lions / elephants...... so I thought maybe its good for bison / buffalos

What do you guys think of this caliber ?

Jano,

The recoil will be awful.....sure to knock you back at least 10 feet.....you really don't want to shoot it.  I suggest you let me help you out and take it off your hands.  Just let me know when you want me to get it..... .

That's an awesome present!  Have fun with it!   :-D

Take care,
JCM

Jano,

I have this exact same gun, except that I had it customized with a McMillan stock, glass bedded, pillar bedded, etc.  Believe it or not, with factory Federal Plain Jane 300 grain Hi-Shocks, it can shoot less than 1/4" groups at 100 yards.

Now let's talk about recoil.
People say that the .375H&H has more of a "push" rather than a "punch."  Well, I don't know about that.  Let's just say that it has both.  Remember, you are pushing 270 and 300 grain bullets at very high velocities.

As for bison, it is more than enough.  Many hunters use the good ole .30-06 with premium bullets.  Sure, a bison will not drop in its tracks when shot with a .30-06, but then again, I don't think that a bison will drop in its tracks from a .375H&H either.  Rather, it should drop sooner, that's all.

Congrats on the rifle.
