CZ 550 American. Want new stock
« on: October 20, 2005, 03:53:23 AM »
I would like to put a different stock on my 550. The reasons are that the gun is very susceptible to changes in point of impact when the humidity changes, and I would like a lighter gun.  I see that McMillan makes a kevlar stock for the CZ 550. This is interesting. Do you know of any kevlar or otherwise high quality synthetic stocks for the 550? Do these need to be installed by a gunsmith or are they a simple replacement that I can make?

If you've made such a conversion yourself, are you satisfied with the results?

I have not changed out the stock on any of my CZ's but I would be willing to bet the McMillan stock is a drop in fit. I can't see them making a kevlar stock that wouldn't be but you could always call them and ask to be 100% sure. As far as changing it out, all you would have to do is unscrew the old one and screw on the new one. I have had the stocks off of all of mine and they come off in about 1-2 minutes.  A laminate stock would also fix the swelling problem but wouldn't be as light weight as the kevlar.

Thanks CZman! I'll give them a call.

I've had the stock off mine to adjust the trigger to my liking and to check the adjustment of things.  This .270 is a really good gun, basically, but the shifting points of impact have really affected my confidence in the gun and I either need to get rid of it or fix it.

Do you happen to know of a good replacement base and rings, preferably aluminum rings, for the 550?

If I can cut a pound off it's weight, I'll undoubtedly keep it.

Thanks again, and good shooting to you!

:D  Your welcome.

Talley, Burris, Leupold are some of the bigger names that make rings for that rifle but I'm not sure about aluminum.
CZ also sells kevlar stocks for your rifle but they are $300

Good luck to you and let me know what you find.

Thanks for the info. I called McMillan about their stocks and they cost about $300 also.  I'll check out the CZ stocks.

You might want to check out MPI for stocks. www.mpistocks.com, there the only other one I've found that has a stock for a 550. As far as rings I've put a set of Warne rings on one of mine. There steel, dont seem to heavy and the price is right. CRASH87

Before investing in a stock maybe make sure you know the changing POI is due to the stock. The stock on my CZ-550 was also causing problems and the barrel was touching the stock in two places and it would get worse or better on the bench depending on what part of the forend was laying on the shooting rest. My quick fix was to simply cut a piece of that black plastic from the DVD cases movies come in. Cut it to fit the front inlet where the barrel lug goes in. Heated a screwdriver and melted a hole through it for the bolt, cleaned it up and screwed in the action. the barrel was free floating after that and it solved my changing POI problem. Raised the barrel just a hair and its fine now, (like adding a gasket). At least this way you know if you got a decent shooter thats worth investing in a new stock for. Also if you go this route, check the DVD cases as some are thinner than others. I got the thinnest one I could find from one of those cheap DVD's which my kids' sesame street movies come on. Hope it helps.

HA HA! Cool I used a copper brake line seal on my 527 carbine to do the same thing. I thought I was the only one.
