WALLYWORLD......TEMPTING......CAN'T RESIST!!!!!....HELP!!!
« on: October 28, 2005, 11:56:35 PM »
And all this days after buying a #4 Mk1.  When it rains, it pours.

Got off work tonight/this morning.  I work swing and got off at 1am.  Wally-World is about halfway home and right on the way.  Stopped off to get dinner and a blaze orange hat to keep from getting shot up in the woods.  While I was in the Sporting Goods section, I stopped and looked in the gun carosel.  I was hoping to see a Stevens 200 or a Mossberg ATR but the slots were empty.  The other usual suspects were there, Ruger, Remington etc.  Then I saw it (cue choir music from above) It was a Howaby(Japanese Weatherby) Vanguard in 300 Weatherby.  So what you ask?  It is marked down from $388.99 to...drum roll please $299.99.  Fortunatly or unfortunatly depending on perspective there wasn't anyone in the store with working brain cells available to put it on layaway.  I did manage to locate someone that spoke english that verified that there is more than one in the store.

Did some home work.  Weatherby cases are pretty reasonable with my FFL discount from Midway.  Factory second Accubonds and Partitions are affordable through Shooters Pro Shop.  I can continue to use the same old Hornady BT's for plinking.   So with that, I talked myself into it.

I need a 300 Weatherby Magnumb like a need a hole in my head.  I have several medium calibers.  Don't need no more.  I am out of safe space.  I have been jonesing for a 338 or 375 for awhile.  But this is too good to pass up.  $300 for a 300 Weatherby Magnum.
I'm going back first thing in the morning and putting it on layaway.

My explaination to "The Imperial Red-Headed Scorpio"?

"But honey it was on sale.  Look how much I saved"  If it's a good enough excuse for HER, it's good enough to for me.

And if I get bored with 300 Weatherby I can always rebarrel to 375 H&H or ?

Zeke,

The way Wally World woks don't be surprised if they drop the price to $250 before you get yours out of layaway.  When they decide to reduce slow moving inventory you can get some great bargains.

I always hit the sporting goods section after hunting season to pick up ammo and supplies at fantastic savings, especially muzzle loader stuff.

I do the same thing...i have bought guns on clearance for $100 such as a mossberg 500 and a buckmasters nikon scope for $40 and leupold vx-1 4-12 for $100.... and one of the associates at my local walmart is a gun nut so he lets me know of when they have closeouts and he special orders guns for me..works out well but you have to have patience and go frequently...

When you bring it home I'd suggest that it goes something like this:  "Look Red, I've got my new rifle.  And here's a nice present for you that I bought with the money I saved."

:D  :D  :D  I have a safe that is full, but only two or three of the guns belong to me.  The rest all belong to my wife, you know, Merry Christmas darling, do you like the new Sig 220 I bought for you, or Happy Birthday baby, I thought you would like a new Sako 22-250 so you can join me in a coyote hunt.  Funny though, she doesn't use any of them, matter of fact I even have to clean and care for the guns after taking them out and shooting them for her.

I just can't understand her, after almost forty years of marriage she shows little or no appreciation for all the guns I bought her. Course, I don't like any of the bracelets, neckless' or ear rings she bought for me.........guess that makes us even.

My wife didn't flinch.  She understood a 25% discount.  She also likes guns that don't have cosmoline.

I did have to do fancy talking to get the layaway.  The gun rang up as a red-tag clearance, not eligible for layaway.  A call to the Store Manager and 50% down allowed me to put the gun on layaway.  It turns out it was the last one they had.  Such a deal.

I have dies, brass and assorted goodies on the way from Midway.  Found a copy of Handloader #212.  Ken Waters retested the 300 Weatherby with the same 24" barrel my gun has.  Got some good loads to start with.

Just need to rob a scope off one of my other guns.

Zeke you have a good wife but mine is better...she came into the marriage owning a Dillion Square Deal press, Colt 1911 and an Colt AR15 and knew how to use them thanks to her father.  When K-mart was closing stores she came home with a 14 gun Homak cabinet!

Thank the Good Lord above for our wives! And fathers take your daughters shooting.

Nice buy!!! It's a nice, accurate rig if you can handle the recoil! My brother has one and I've only shot his a couple of times and that was enough! But it's a hoot to shoot long range with that baby. We were down at the river shooting at a stick in the mud about 300 yards down range and were drilling it every time with no hold over. I was shooting my .280 and was amazed at the difference in drop between the two at that range...

Zeke - that's a pretty darn good buy.  I don't need one either but sometimes ya just can't pass up a good deal.  And it sounds like your wife is a practical gal.  You sound like a happy camper.

My honey just gave me an empty gun safe - and told me to fill it however I wanted.  I'm still tryin' to catch my breath.  Mikey.

Drop me a PM later I've got load data for 135-180gr for the 300WBY.

Bullet brands are Remington, Swift, Barnes, and custom swag.

Great job on the deal

Just let me know.

I was in the right place at the right time.
I admit that when I saw it on the rack, visions of 375's and 416's immediately danced through my head.  Great platform for a donor action.  But I plan to go ahead and live with the 300 Weatherby Magnumb and see how I like it.

I still have a #4 Mk1 to explain to "The Imperial Red-Headed Scorpio". I ordered it from AIM one day before spotting the Howaby.

For some reason she gets totally unreasonable I use her pots and pans to boil cosmoline out of the small parts.  Doesn't care for using the bathtub to do the Easy-Off treatment to stocks.  Things will get pretty lively later on this week.  Think I'll volunteer for OT and forget to turn on my cell phone.

If all else fails take the wife to the range with you and let her fire off a box or two with the .300Mag.  It should knock her silly enough that it'll end any flak you might be getting.  You'll end up with a much more docile wife, that is if she doesn't leave you!  Best wishes.
