Question Regarding a Remington Action, please advise
« on: March 01, 2003, 04:02:47 PM »
Hi and thanks in advance,

I have an opportunity to acquire from a friend a SS Remington 700 BDL action.

Here are the specs:  Trued, retimed, fluted the bolt body and added a glued in single shot adapter.  It has a tuned factory trigger set at 1 LB. It has also been fitted with a Winchester model 70 style bolt release.  Used a little under 1000 rounds.

Here is my question, since the bulk of the gunsmithing work has already been done, can I just send it off to a smith to chamber and thread a barrel on it?  Or is more work going to have to be done to it?

Thanks
Frank D

Several questions enter my mind. Why is he getting rid of it? Are you buying the action or is he giving it to you?If you have to buy the action,I would get a new one that hasn't been worked over.Is it a long action or short action? Was it used for a convential cal.or mag. cal.Why change the bolt release?I know all this sounds pessimistic but the action is the closest part to your face.If I might suggest it would be to get a new one and start from scratch. Or,I would take this one to a knowledgeable gunsmith and have him to verify its safety and value. Maybe I overeact but enough seems to happen accidently.Good luck with your decision and stay safe.I am CAL......

demarpaint,
The answer to your question is yes; you can send it to have a new barrel threaded and chambered without more work. None of the work already done is mandantory for threading and chambering a new barrel.

The only part of your list of changes to this action that sent up a red flag for me was the 1lb factory trigger.  This is a definite no-no!!!!  I don't believe the Rem trigger is considered safe under 2 to 2.5lbs.  Either have it reworked back to a "safe" weight, or replace it with an aftermarket trigger like a Timney if you want to stay in the 1lb range!!

Otherwise it sounds ready to barrel and chamber!

Good luck ... Crayfish

Have to agree with the above poster.  No remington trigger can be safe at 1 pound and probably not even at 2 1/2.  I would suggest no less than 3 to 3 1/2 pounds. If 1 pound is the goal you will need a special light pull trigger!!  Most 2 lever triggers will have too much swinging mass to be safe at 1 pound.  They will release when the butt is bumped on the the ground or the bolt is slammed shut...  Try Shilen, Jewel, or Canjar..  Still, nothing that has been done would cause concern as far a rebarreling..  Good luck from the gunnut69
