Adding the recoil pad
« on: October 19, 2005, 12:45:27 PM »
I finally got both recoil pads on my SxS guns.  I used the jig and got right close but decided I wanted it dead even with the wood.

So went to the disk sander and got it even.  'Course I now had to refinish the aft end of the stock but since I've already done it 3 times to one stock and once to the other I'm getting good at it.

They turned out nicely.

A couple of notes:  first while you can get the hard back of the recoil pad (which is the part that comes in contact with the stock) smooth and even with the wood the rubber part has a tendency to flex out of the way of the sander and then be "proud" of the rest.  I tried freezing the pad and it helped but there is still some overhang.  Not enough to notice except I notice it.  Since these are working guns I'm not upset about them.

Another thing is you have to go very slowly on the sander--not because you might take off too much wood, which you can, but if you force it you run the risk of ruining the pad by taking too much off or having the rubber part tear away from the base.

All in all, I was pleased with this learning experience.
