I need a better camrea!
« on: September 02, 2005, 05:00:42 PM »
For years there have been reports of large black panthers in my area of Missouri. The local Conservation Department finally admited there were cougars in the area, but the large black cats have remained a mystery. My father has seen them, but I haven't.... until now!

The weather has finally cooled off just enough that I can comfortably walk around on my 110 forested acre property again. Two days ago I went for a walk starting at 1 in the afternoon. There were a few puffy clouds in the sky, a slight breeze, and the temprature was about 84.

I was carrying my new AR15 to see how it could handle being dragged around the woods. I had been walking for some time when I reached the river that runs through my property. I spotted a series of large flat rocks along the river that were crying my name to sit on them and to cool off. I had a seat on one rock.

The opposite side of the river had a very thick cover of brush and tall sycamore trees. It was almost pitch black in the undergrowth due to all the brush. I was watching schools of small minnows that were in the stream when something caught my eye. I looked across the river to see an animal that had shiny black fur, a long tail, and carrying its head very low. I only saw it for about 5 seconds. This animal may have seen me, but it didn't look straight at me. I have seen many dogs and coyotes, but both of these animals will look straight at you in the eye for at least a split second. I have never seen a dog that won't look at you if you are near it. Whatever it was is about the size of a german shepard.

Needless to say I realized I need a good digital camrea that has zoom and can take quality pictures. Needless to say I will NEVER venture into my woods again without a firearm. At least I know where this "thing" is and how to find it! If I do get a picture of it I will share it with all of you!

I spotted my very first mountainlion tracks in Vermont when there was light snow cover on the ground.  Its a very good time to scout around to see whats out there. I have seen these tracks move from the higher elevations into the lower areas over the years too.  As they multiply there spreading  out more and more.  These big cats are very elusive and like impossible to find and see one consider yourself lucky if you do see one.  Most people who go looking for them and never find a sign of them. You will swear there are none there but these are the most elusive animal i have ever seen and they will avoid us at all costs. But going looking when there is light snow on the ground is the key to finding sign of them. Just remember your looking for very large cat tracks. When i first seen the ones i saw we found a mother bear and cub tracks in the snow then the cat tracks appeared near them asif the cat was tracking it too.  The mother bear walked in a more straight path while the cub wandered to the right and left of the mother bears tracks.  As soon as we figured it all out we backed off because i didn't want a confrontation with a mother bear with cub.

Now is not the time to go wandering in the woods and not have a firearm with you. If you do take the family for a hike in the woods take the family dog with you and stay close together.  And keep an eye on the dog it will be the first thing to let you know that something is nearby.  Stay alert when your in the woods too, rely on your senses too it could save your life. With all these predators making a comeback you just may run into one.  I am always aware of ambush points too like overhead ledges. Just remember these are wild animals and not your tame house cat. These big cats are being seen thoughout the northeast too now.

I hear that on carrying a firearm! It a tough decision between one of my favorite 12 gauge shotguns or one of my bolt action mil-surps.

Go figure, sometimes when I walk around my 110 acres I go hoping to get a glimpse of something strange and when I go walking just to kill time then I see something!

Maybe I will set up a trail camrea in the area I saw it and get a picture of it!
