The following episode might be of some interest to some.
As hunting season is fast approaching, my son and I decided that we would take this morning to confirm the zero's on our deer rifles to insure that nothing has gotten out of whack.
As is our custom on a "confirmation" we donot use a paper target. Instead we bring along a telescope and set it up just behind the shooter. We than pick a small target on the berm (small rock, etc.) and the shooter shoots at this with the man on the telescope calling the bullet strike.
My favorite love these days, is a Ruger Compact in 308 which I had retrofited with the Ashley Express Ghost ring, and their post front sight.
It was overcast at the berm (100 yds) so I had difficulty even seeing the small stone with the naked eye. Scrounging around the berm we found a few orange clay birds. I set one of thes up in front of the small rock. At the 100 yd shooting bench I could just make out the orange clay bird. Looking through the aperture, I put the top of the post on as much orange as I could see. Somwhat to my suprise I shattered it.
The reason I tell this tale is because I am from the "old geezer's croud (69). So those of you out there who can't see their sights anymore, try the ghost ring. You'll be suprised. You may not need to jump to a scope.
If you want some guidelines as to what makes a good ghost ring set up. take a look at the M-1 Garand or the M-14. For us "old geezers" the aperture opening can be even larger.
