Reliability of Marlin 7000
« on: August 16, 2005, 07:29:12 PM »
Hello to all, I am considering getting a Marlin 7000 and I like what I hear about it so far. My only question is if it is a reliable gun that will feed most kinds of ammo?? Does it have any feeding problems and is there any ammo that it will not feed?? It will be used mainly for plinking and some  gopher hunting but its main job will be for plinking as I have a CZ 452 for hunting. Thanks for your help.

I have used Remington and bulk Federal and never had a feed problem.

That is good to hear since the federal bulk packs are nice and cheap. How many rounds do you have through your gun??

Probably put 1000+ rounds through it so far. I am meticulous in cleaning all my guns right after shooting them.

I'v used many types of ammo through it with no feeding problems.I did have a scope walking problem with it,using the millet angle lock rings.I have heard the weaver rings didnt have this problem(a few people). It may be the gun or the rings. I fixed mine with a set screw now its wonderfully accurate.I to have a CZ luz,but the 7000 will shoot just as good as it will, the 7000 is a better hunter than the CZ once you find the ammo it likes.Except that the CZ feels better.Once you get used to the 7000 the CZ will become your target rifle.

I got a 7000, I love the gun but have the same problem with my scope rings waking. I have Burris rings and would like to know in detail how you fixed the problem.

Put the rings and scope on the rifle, position it where you want it.Take scope off and center mark right behind the rear ring.Take rings off and tear down gun to the reciever.Lightly center punch center mark, not to hard its aluminum.Drill a straight hole through the reciever(AT center mark)using a #25 drill bit(.1495 of an inch). If you dont or cant find a #25 drill bit you can use a 9/64 drill bit(.140625 of an inch) because the reciever is soft aluminum,I used the 9/64 with no problems.Tap the hole with a 10-24 Tap,if you drilled the hole with the 9/64 bit it will be a little tight at first, but it will go with some perswasion.Use a little oil on the tap,and about every turn back the tap out a quarter of a turn(this breaks of the shaving). After you got your hole tapped take a 10-24 allen head bolt run it all the way down tight to the reciever.Look on the inside of the reciever and count the number of threads protruding through the reciever, take the Allen head bolt out, count the treads and mark(you want the Allen head bolt to fit flush on the inside of the reciever{thread side}).Run a thin nut up the bolt, and using a hack saw cut off excess threads.Take nut off(cleans the cut)refit bolt and make sure its flush on the inside,if not finish it with grinder or sand paper(IT MUST BE FLUSH WITH THE INSIDE OF RECIEVER).Once your bolt is at the right length paint it black(you'll never know its on the gun).Put a little "BLUE" loctite thread sealer on the threads and install. Dont over tighten Its Aluminum remember(just snug it good.Clean the inside of reciever of any metal shavings and loctie. But rear ring to bolt, problem solved.Sound to complicated try the bkl rings.

You can go to rimfire central and  on the Marlin forum do a search for 7000 scope walking. You should be able to find the exact rings used. Many have used air gun rings.

I also have a 7000, guessin' about 400-600 rds thru it (kinda new)
Millett rings on it too, but so far no walk/creep (knock on wood)
shooting mostly Federal cheap-o bulk packs and have had very good luck

I am surprised how sweet this gun shoots
It's a steal @ 175.00 IMHO
