It is without a doubt my CZ 550 American in 7x57mm Mauser with my handloaded 162 grain Hornady SSTs and 160 grain Nosler Partitions. I have used the 7x57mm with no problems for elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, antelope, wild hog, bear, coyote and even a wild turkey in Texas. I used to own and shoot Rugers until I ran into the CZ 550, studied it and decided to give one a try. I now own another CZ, the 527 and it too, is a tackdriver in .223 Remington. Tom Purdom

“Favorite” ???  Not even sure what “Favorite” means!

No matter what other criteria there is, there is always the fact that one rifle has been used more than any other.  That would be my Ruger 7mm Mag.  But the Browning B92 .44 Mag that Dad gave me has been its backup companion for 20 years or so and has gone elk hunting at least one day each season simply because I like it so much.  Does that mean its “more favorite” than the 7mm Mag?

A couple johhny-come-latelys have captured my attention, too.  The Ruger .257 Roberts is a real sweetheart that does double-duty as a varmint rifle and a big game rifle.  It has the best trigger of any of my single-stage bolt guns and the Leupold Vari-X III 6.5-14 is a perfect match for it.  And the Marlins in .375Win and .45-70, although not long-range guns, have performed beautifully – and there is just something magical about lever guns.

And what about the newcomers, some of which haven’t even gone hunting yet, the Marlin .30-30 and Ruger canoe-paddle .300 Win Mag?  The .30-30 is serious enough for elk but very easy on the shoulder and the .300 is arguably the best elk rifle I own.  The .30-30 is a classic and the canoe-paddle stock on the .300 is nothing if not functional.  (People either hate them or love the canoe paddle stocks, it seems.  I appreciate their utility, which has its own beauty.)  As much as I look forward to hunting with them, that may not happen this year unless I get my load development butt in gear.  But how can anyone say they are not my favorites (at least for the moment) when I’m salivating at the thought of hunting with them?

That said, it looks like the 7mm Mag will be going elk hunting again this fall.  Not at all sure what the backup rifle will be.

Nice post Coyote Hunter! :D

Being a reloader and always searching for the "perfect" rifle/load combination is an evil obsession.
Right now I could use a rating system...kinda like a depth chart for a football team. :) These all shoot well under MOA groups.

1.) Remington 700 BDL SS...26"bbl...7mm STW
2.) Browning SS Stalker... .280 Rem
3.) Sako GreyWolf SS... .270 Win
4.) CZ 550 "American"... .308 Win

I also have a pet lever action. A big bore Winchester 94 in .356 Win. It is amazingly accurate out to 100yds with its compact 20" barrel. I shot a whitetail buck with it last year at 60yds...the 200gr flatnose sure flattened him!

I'd have to say its my Savage 110L I bought when JFK was the President-elect. It was my first left handed rifle and they'd have to pry it from my cold dead hands. It started out as a .243, and I shot is so much it lost interest in the lighter bullet weights. I had is rebored to .263 Express, an eary verision of the .260 Remington. I'm sorry I can't do it justice with a photo, but I'm a real clutz with a camera.

I have four ot the wsm and I tell ya, it is hard to pick a favorite.  Each has it's own job.  223 wssm will kill any thing for a deer, to a chipmunk and a 100 yds.  My 25wssm coyote is a great deer gun and just nice to look at.  270 wsm is also a great for deer or what ever else you want to hunt.  Now my 300 wsm will stop that bus that you are late for.  All my guns will shot 3 shells under a quater at 100 yds.  So give the short mags a look. :D
