Remington model 7 7mm08
« on: August 30, 2005, 10:05:35 AM »
I just bought a 7mm08 model 7.  I have never owned a 7mm08.  I have a real weakness for these model 7's, this will make number 3.   If you have one tell me how it shoots and your favorite load recipe.  I load mainly Sierra and Hornady.  Thank you in advance.

I think the model 7 in 7-08 is the greatest thing since bottled beer.  H4895 is my preferred powder and bullets in the 139-145 range. This past fall, however, I killed a couple of deer using 150gr RN bullets while hunting around here. (WV 200yards or less) and they will definitely slap a deer down.

Although some folks swear by them for elk hunting, I don't but that is conjecture on my part as I have never been elk hunting with a 7-08.  For everything else, except the great bears of course, it is a perfect rifle.  The only down side to owning a M-7 in 7-08 is you have little need to buy another rifle.

My favorite load is as follows:

Firearm: Remington M-7 7mm-08
Bullet:  139 grain Hornady Spire Point
Powder:45.0 grains of Accurate Arms MRP (AA-3100)
Primer: Remington 9 1/2

The above load has accounted for quite a few deer over the years!
I see no need to look for another load!

I have the one that likes the factory Hornady 139 grainers just fine.  It will put 3 into 1" at 100yds all day long.  I do plan to spend some more time with this rifle and most likely do the following:  Install a Tinmey trigger, glass bed the action, and fully float the barrel.  It already has a 3x9 Nikon Monarch on it.  I have many other rifles, but I always seen to grab this rifle when I leave for a hunt.

Uuuuhhhhh, nixsrs93, if you're getting 3 in an inch with store-bought ammo, I'm not sure I'd do too much to it.  Certainly not mess with your basic set up.  Free floating the barrel is not the do-all, be-all that some folks would have you believe.  Change the trigger is you choose but a competent gunsmith can work the trigger down to a crisp RELIABLE 2.5-3.5lbs for half or less what a Timney would cost you.

So that's who got the good one that Remington made.  I was beginning to wonder if Remington could make a rifle that could perform out of the box without doing anything to them.

I also second what beemanbeme said.  If you have it shooting like that with factory ammo I wouldn't touch anything else except maybe working up some hand loads for it and letting a qualified Gunsmith lighten up the trigger to around 3 pounds.   After that, just take good care of it.

And congradulations for doing a superb job of mounting the scope, scope mount and rings.  You did it right.  The Model 7 probably fits you to a ' T ' too.

I like ball powders, because my measure throws such uniform loads. Something like H338 or H414 is well matched to the 140 class bullets. 160s would be better for anythng larger or tougher than deer/hogs/black bears, and H414 would probably be better for them. I have taken 5 meat elk with 140 grain 6.5 bullets and they did an excellet job. The good 160 grain 7mm bullets ought to perform the same.  :D
