Last year while hunting in the Chicken up around the 4000 foot level in a wooded area I heard a strange noise each night at about 2:00 AM near my tent. The noise went like this:

Whoop Whoop Whoop Whoop Whoop......

It made this noise continuously but the pitch change each time kind of like a siren. It also made a lot of ruckus when it walked by and then it would stop when it reached it's destination about 100 yds up the trail -judging from the noise.

This happened three nights in a row. It had to be small critter because it walked a fairly straight line real slow starting from behind my tent, along my tent, and to the front of my tent and then onto the trail. At one time it stepped on on tent tie down lines. Never left any tracks as the ground was frozen hard and it had not snowed as of yet.

I was thinking it might be a Porkupine looking for a lady friend---but I dunno. I have seen lots of porkupines while hunting but never heard one make a vocal noise. I have mentioned this to numerous people but nobody knows.

It was pitch black out the middle of September. I never bothered looking out but must admit a little concerned. Was glad I had my 44 inside the tent. Any replies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Those were caribou farts caught in the brush and thawing as the temperature increased. Usually hear them in the spring. :bye:

A wolverine, maybe? Times like that them tent walls sure seem mighty thin, eh!

Hey, I want to thank you guys for the replies. This is a lot of fun!!!

To answer your questions Matt in AK. I only drink on days ending in "Y" --but not on that hunting trip. I was hunting alone this trip and it took all my effort just to get back to camp each night.

Daveinthebush: Those could have been caribou farts :? as the caribou were thick and almost mowed my tent down a few times. Too bad I only had a moose permit. They cut the caribou season short on that week.

DennisB: I also want to thank you for the reply. The thought that it could be a wolverine also crossed my mind but I Dunno. Again, thanks.

Balto: I just went out to check my defective elec. meter and guess what I heard?

"Whoop Whoop Whoop Whoop Whoop...... "

The sound came from behind the house, no residences, swampy area with trees. It was moving quite fast, not an animal walking in the soft snow speed. I would say flying if anything. The sound faded or was going away quite fast. My best guess on distance would be 75-100 yards back where the spruce stop and the willows start.

My best guess would be a bird of some sort.:bird:
