A friend just gave me a Daco Cross bow. Its a 150 LB. bow and he says he has never shot it. From the look of it I believe it. The string is still waxed good, and it looks fine. I have hunted with my old marten compound and I am curious about this thing. Will it hit as hard as my Marten? And how do you cock the darn thing. Its like pulling a Caddy.I am looking foreward to shooting it but i figure i will wait and hear from you old timers. Great site here . Seems to be a good bunch of people.Have a good one all. Thanks

Do you have pic of the bow? I've had 3 Dacos. But i've never seen A 150 LBer by Daco themselves, they were mostly 115 and 125 lbers. Are you sure its not a Excalibur -Daco as they were 150lbs. does it look likje these?

Thanks for the reply. It says its a Astro Daco Hornet, 150 LBS. on  the bow.On the left side of the  stock, at the front,it says 830103 Hornet. Then on a sticker it says Daco Crossbow Arbalete Hornet Newmarket Ont. Canada L3Y  1R1 Most of it is self explanatory. It has a Red safety on the back of the string lock (thing). Its a one piece bow. Don't have any pics of it but as soon as i get some i will post them. By the way if you don't shoot it at the hunt, how do you uncock it without putting the stock through your ribs and tearing off your hand.Must be a 2 person deal. One holds and the other hits the safety and trigger. Thanks for your time and patience with a green horn Crossbow user. :D  See ya

Safest way is too shoot a bolt/arrow with a fieldtip in to the ground or a target..I unload mine by shooting a bolt into the ground. Sure beats ripping off your fingers

I used to hunt with a 150 lb Astro Daco Hornet, so I assume that yours must be similar to mine.

To string the bow, I found it best to take the bow off the stock, stand on the one side of the bow, and pull the other side upward with the loop in your string ready to slip over the end.  Make sure the loop will fit over the end of the limb before pulling your guts out.  The strung bow can then be re-mounted to the stock.

To cock the bow (if you're right handed), put your right foot in the stirrup, resting the stock against your left hip.  Lean forward, and grasp the string with both hands (one on either side of the stock) keeping the knuckle of each index finger against the side of the stock.  By straightening up using a combination of your back and leg muscles you should be able to cock the bow.

By keeping the knuckles of your index fingers against the stock, you keep the string centred for accuracy.

My bow had a lever/button at the tang, just behind the mechanism, that had to be pushed forward at the instant the trigger was pulled to discharge the bow.

Be sure never to dry-fire the bow.
Hunting is Exciting!  Bolt actions are BORING!!
Don't mix the two!

I uncock my 150 lb Vixens by hand usually, grasp the string in both hands and pull up to relieve the presure on the engager clasping the string. With your thumb disengage the safety to off position and put your thumb in trigger guard and press the trigger and let the string down easy. 8)
Put gtloves on the first time you try this if it slips it can remove a layer of skin. (It smarts). When hunting I unload with an old bolt with a judo point or blunt in cold weather.

FYI Tim. Daco went out of busness in the late eightys, so your bow is at least 16 years old. If the string is original or you don't know how old it is,I suggest replacing it. It may last  for 1000 shots or it may last 5 shots. Either way have your insurance paid up. I repace my strings every hunting season and keep the old ones as spares On my Vixens.
You can have a pro shop make up a string for you for less than $10. Best to err on the safe side. Also have them chechkout the limbs, metal fatigue Happens with Daco limbs.

Great information from you guys. Saves me a lot of trouble.Shucks digger this bow is older then my son. Seems like good insurance , getting it checked out and a new string made.Rick Teal  was like a step by step book, great for a new crossbow shooter. And i think i will take Gary L's advice and shoot a field tip into the ground. I assume it will hit as hard as my old Bear Whitetail and my Marten Couger. I used to shoot tournaments with the Marten so I look foreward to shooting this beast. Can i use my tintex butt for this or will it drive it through ?Once again, thanks for making me feel welcome, not like other places i have been to. Thanks guys :-)

Tim, you can shoot an old field point into the ground or use a rubber blunt or judo point. Easier to extract.

I had one of these bows given to me also. It is in immaculate condition. Would like to put some type of sight on it. Even being a 150# bow what are the arrow speeds? Always wanted to start bowhunting and wondering if this would suitable.

Any advice would be appreciated
