This morning we had the two youngest grandkids over early as the older ones were off to a 4-H Rabbit Show. I had our youngest Granddaughter, age 4, shooting GrandmaÂ’s Beeman Super 12 .20 at different targets around the yard when she spotted a young Ground Squirrel in GrandmaÂ’s garden. She whispered she wanted to try to hit it so I told her to go ahead. One shot at 39 yards(measured) hit the squirrel in the right ear killing it instantly. Granddaughter put the rifle down and ran to tell Grandma while I retrieved it from the garden. Talk to a taxidermist friend and IÂ’m having the squirrel mounted for her for her upcoming birthday, July 4th.(sheÂ’ll ge it after her birthday when itÂ’s done). I donÂ’t want any to think I am proud of my young "Annie Oakley" but the wife is going to have to sew the buttons back on my shirt. Lawdog

My views on how old a child needs to be to start teach them about firearms is if they can understand what I'm saying they're old enough. I start them shooting as soon as they can keep both ends of the rifle off the ground at the same time. My Granddaughter has been shooting for almost two years now. Started all the kids/grandkids off with a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun and worked up as they got older. As soon as my Granddaughter can safely cock a TFM97 that IÂ’ve restocked, sheÂ’ll move to it. She already will go thru a Â“brickÂ” of .22 lr ammo and look for more when at the range. I also have her shooting a re-stocked single shot 28 ga. on hand thrown clays. Her mother gets her to clean up her room by telling her if she wants to go over to GrandpaÂ’s and shoot she has to keep her room clean/do her chores. Never too young to start making a new hunting buddy. Lawdog

Lawdog, that was great; after reading about that shooting experience with your granddaughter it brought back memories of my first bird kill with a pellet gun. I shot a magpie at 25 yards with a 22 cal. Benjamin pump up pellet gun, with my grandfather standing next to me. That was about 44 years ago. Your granddaughter will never forget that experience.

When the wife wanted to shoot air rifles she wanted one with some power. Cocking my Beeman Crow Magnum(60 lb.) or Kodiak(48 lb.) was way to much for her. This is when we got into PCP's and have never regretted doing so. Her Super 12 goes nicely with my Theoben Rapid 12/250(.25) as they use the same air bottles. When the wife was convalescing from her auto accident two years ago(July 13, 2003) she kept me busy at night filling the scuba tanks with air. Couldn't find an oak ball on any of the Black Oaks around the house and no pests were found either. Between the Super 12, her re-barreled Ruger 10/22 and her custom M98 6.5mm Swede, nothing showed within rifle range around the house. Lawdog
