Update on "Attention All Dove Hunters!!!"
« on: April 11, 2003, 01:32:56 PM »
Just seen this and though I would let everyone know.

"Update: California Dove Bill Shelved

A bill that would've banned dove hunting in California was pulled by its author last Wednesday, a week before it was scheduled for its first hearing in an environmental committee.

Democratic Assemblyman Joe Nation says he'll work with the California Department of Fish and Game to help lower the crippling rate for doves that are shot. Nation says he's also concerned about the environmental impacts of lead shot.

Nation says the legislation was only intended to look at how to avoid having doves crippled rather than killed. He claims 25 percent of the 2 million doves shot annually in California end up crippled."

What I would like to know is just where did he get the idea that 1 out of every 4 dove shot end up "crippled"?  I mean I do my share in keeping the ammo companies in business by missing my share but I don't believe that 25% of the dove I shoot(and hit) fly off "crippled".  You know it's funny that his original bill didn't say anything about "environmental impacts of lead shot" or "25 percent of the 2 million doves shot annually in California end up crippled".  Strange.  Lawdog

If you make the worst case assumption that his claim is true, then you have the best fed coyotes and fox in the country.   That should make him happy, at least the meat isn't wasted.

What is it about Ca that draws idiots like flies to a horse turd?  This person is a jackass, and the sad thing is that he has zero knowledge of the theories behind game management, and the idea of doomed surplus in animal populations that are prolific reproducers.  I say we encourage the folks to meet to discuss this latest brainchild, then lobatamize the whole lot of them in one fell swoop!!!  though it appears that many of them already have had partial lobotamies already lol.
There is truth that the average dove hunter is probably not proficient with a shotgun as seen by the ammo manufacturers statistics that 8 shells are shot to kill each dove taken( by that I mean it averages 8 shells/dove killed).  The really scary thing is that those of us who average 2/1 dove or less skew the hell out of of it so in reality, most dove hunters are probably more in the 10 shell/dove.

The thing is that these folks missing like hell probably miss cleanly and do not cripple many at all.  And those that are crippled will be utalized by other animals as indicated in previous posts.

This is what happens in a society that has life too easy - idiots survive and often prosper due to the large number of fellow idiots .

If this liberal idiot from CA is right wouldn't it be better that this 25 percent of crippled doves are going off to die from the lead poisoning than the thousands of ducks and geese that fly off with steel pellets lodged in their butts, and that they are trully walking around crippled for life. This whole lead shot issue is just one big ploy to cause more and more hunters to quit hunting. If they make us have to use steel shot on all game birds and waterfowl, then I would guess that the percentage would raise to 50 percent or higher ratio. This is just a guess judging by how inefficient steel shot seems to be on waterfowl. We do have a couple of good substitutes (Hevi shot and bismuth) but who can afford to shoot shot like this at doves.

I think that thinking critically of the usage of lead shot is a good thing,  considering millions of waterfowl and even many scavengers die from lead poisoning and after that, an un-countable amounts of birth defects.

I also have a hard time believing those stats. Doves are fairly fragile birds and are not very tollerant of a hit even in a non vital area.
Just another worthless opinion!!
