My First Rifle, a Tikka, Got a few ?'s
« on: May 04, 2005, 09:45:02 PM »
Greetings all. I'm new to rifles and wanted to get some clarification on a few subjects. Based on what I've read here for a few months I felt confidant enough to make my first rifle purchase, a Tikka T3 Lite Stainless chambered in 270 Win. And after reading many debates in the Optics section I'm going to get a Bushnell Elite 4200, 2.5-10x40 in silver to round out the package. Now on to my questions.

Would a Hoppe's 9 Bore Snake be ok to use for cleaning during the break-in? I would assume it wouldn't make a difference, and I love using them to clean my pistols, but after reading many break-in post that came up in a forum search I didn't see the Bore Snake mentioned.

Has any Tikka or Sako owners had any luck finding a Limbsaver recoil pad #10011? Nothing comes up in a google or froogle search and none of the local stores that carry Limbsaver products have one. I would love to know how I could get my hands on one.

Should I use the scope mounts that came with the Tikka? I seem to recall someone mentioning they couldn't get the freebie scope mounts to stay zeroed. Is this what most of y'all Tikka owners have found to be the norm?

Guess that will cover my questions for now. I'm sure I'll think of a few others in time however :) .

Thank y'all for the wealth of information on this forum.

congrats on picking out a great rifle, I have bought three. The bore snake should work fine, for quick cleans. I would try midway usa for the recoil pad or maybe natchezss.com. Let us know when you find one. I have kept the factory rings on all my rifles, one being a t-3 ss/syn in 7 mag and not had any problems. Enjoy!

First off, welcome to Graybeard Outdoors! :D

So a Tikka T3 Stainless Synthetic in .270 with an Elite 4200 2.5x-10x-40mm...........hmmmmmm.......sounds like another Zachary. :)

Yes, you are making an excellent purchase - one that you will be very happy with for many, many years to come!

As for the boresnake, many gunsmiths have told me to stay away from it.  Why?  Because when it comes out, it is dirty, so when you put it  back in, it is still dirty.  Since you already have one of the best rifles and scopes, go with the best cleaning rods - one piece rods - not the mulitple pieces.  You can go to midway as I think I bought mine there.  These one piece rods are plastic coated so they don't harm the inside of the barrel, and also come with a handle at the end that has ball bearings so it turns with ease.

As for the rings, I haven't used them yet, so I can't really say, although I think that it would be much better for me (and you and any other Tikka owners) to get the new Tikka rings from Talley.

Again, congrats on the rifle and scope!

Zachary

First question on cleaning, I would not use a bore snake
on any of my firearms.  I use one piece Dewey rods, with a
good bore guide, on all of my bolt action rifles.  I use Hoppe's #9
for powder solvent, and Montana Xtreme Copper Cream, for
fouling.

I have not changed out a recoil pad on a Tikka, so I am of
no help there.  I did read from some poster, on some
forum, that Limbsaver does have a recoil pad that is suppose
to be a good fit for Tikkas.  I guess I'd call them, and get the
correct size for your rifle, and get a list of retailers that may
carry them.

On the scope rings, I did not use the factory rings.  I purchased
Millets, for my SS/Laminate M695, and Warne rings for
my T-3.  I would buy more Warne rings.  The Warne rings
were not available when I purchased the WH(M695), but
if they were, there would be Warne rings on that rifle, too.

Incidentally, congrats on the new T-3.  One of my fellow
engineers, decided to take up whitetail hunting, and asked
me which rifle he should buy.  After we discussed what he
had for conditions, and future needs, I recommended the T-3, in
.270 Win, and that is what he purchased...He has commented
several times, that he appreciated that advice.  Another
happy T-3 owner.

Great choice on the rifle and the scope.  It is a super set-up.   have used the factory rings on my two T-3's and really like them.  No problems at all.  I also got a limbsaver recoil pad that specifially fits the T-3...it even says so on the package.  Go to limbsaver web page to get the model number.  Good luck.

Zachary,

Are you recommending the Talley Lightweight One-Piece Alloy Scope Mounts, or some other Tally product?

Just to double check will the Dewey 1-Piece Cleaning Rod 27 to 34 Caliber 36" Nylon Coated 12 x 28 Male Thread work? The 27 to 34 caliber is what I'm unsure of. I'm assuming a .270 would be considered a 27 Caliber, please inform me of what caliber it is if I'm wrong, or do I need a 22 to 26 Caliber rod. And should I be using a Nylon Rifle Bore Brush, or a bronze brush.

Thanks

Bravada2002,
Just joined this forum and was kinda just hangin' out.  Saw your questions and thought I would add my 2 cents worth.  Personally I shy away from coated cleaning rods, or steel ones, I prefer the carbon fiber ones made by Tipton, I think.  As for nylon verus bronze brushes, you might just ask whether to drive a Chevy or a Ford, you'll probably get as many opinions.  I use them both.,(although I drive a Chevy).   You got the caliber right for the cleaning rod, but you might want to consider one 40" in length.  After you insert a bore guide into your action a 36" rod can sometimes be a bit on the short side, specially if ya have a 26" barrell.  Good luck, you got a great weapon there.
You''re only as old as you think you are.....I''m still waiting on puberty, AGAIN!!

You could also try a "patchworm"  it looks like weed wacker line, but it's great...very compact and cheap...do a search for 20/20 concept or patchworm...since buying one, I haven't used my dewey or the other rods that I own.

GREAT purchase, I love my Hunter in .308.

For cleaning during break in go with a one piece dewey rod and get yourself a bore guide to clean from the breech.  You can get one of these from Sinclairs Shooting supplies.  GREAT company, cheap and will protect your rifling and chamber for the life of the gun.  Might as well get the one pieces cleaning rod as well from them.  The dewey comes with a patch jag so all you would need is a few brushes.  Whatever you do don't use stainless steel!

Thanks for all the advice folks. I got a Stoney Point bore guide and a Dewey 1-piece cleaning rod and brush so I'm set. I would like to add a little note for future forum readers that might be looking for a bore guide for the T-3. The Stoney Point bore guide seems like a nice product, but I do have a beef with their customer service. I emailed them to confirm which bore guide I needed from them and in their reply they said that I would need an optional bore guide collar for the bore guide to work properly. After receiving the products yesterday and test fitting them the bore guide collar that comes standard seems to fit the receiver better than the optional bore guide collar. Both go in smoothly to the receiver, but the optional bore guide collar has a little play, wiggling, that the standard one doesn't. I'm assuming I should use the Bore Guide Collar that has the least amount of play? Again thanks for the replies.

I have been using bore snakes every since they came out, as has my buddy, and we have had nothing but good results.  Just make sure that after every few uses you put it in a sock, tie the end in a knot, and throw it in the washer.  Much easier than doing the cleaning rod thing at the range.

Great choice of rifle.  I love my lite s. 7-08.  As for the BoreSnake, I like 'em.  They do a good quick job, taking almost no time to use at the range and they are easy to clean (which longwinters pointed out you should do).  It may not be as good as a one-piece, but this isn't bench rest either.  Besides, I still get 5/8"@200yds with my Savage 223, and that's had the bore snake through it a lot.

Zachary,

Are you recommending the Talley Lightweight One-Piece Alloy Scope Mounts, or some other Tally product?

The Talley Lightweight One-Piece Alloy scope mounts.  The Kimber bases are high quality, but the rear base is adjustable, and I don't like adjustable bases (just like the Leupold STD bases).  As such, I ordered the Talley scope mounts and I really like them.  They are indeed one piece - the rings and the bases are one unit.  They are light, but seem very strong.  Now I'm just waiting for the scope to come in so that I can mount it and take it to the range and shoot the gun.
