correct die for brooks 40 caliber
« on: February 14, 2003, 09:07:11 AM »
I recently ordered and recieved a 40 caliber mold from brooks.  It is a semi pointed looking bullet.  Looks alot like the rcbs bps bullet.  What top punch should I go with for my lyman 450.  I was going to order it from lyman but am concerned about bullet deformation.  How about the sizer die.  It will be shot from a badger barrel I was thinking the .410 die.  Any thoughts comments suggestions maybe even experiences.  I have played a little shooting as cast and seems to work but I am not sure about how accurate as it was only first outing.   Please help me if you can.

bullet sizing punch

If you are in need of an expedient bullet sizing top-punch, try sealing wax  Just melt the stick and drip onto the top punch, and press a cast bullet into it.

This trick has saved the day many times for me when the proper top punch was not available.

Sharps-nut.

sounds like the same bullet Steve made for me.I use a 132 top punch for mine and a .410 die just for lubing.Steve Brooks makes a excelent mould. The dementions are exact and the bullet is round,if you dont open the blocks to fast. The only place I get a demention bump is were the mould comes togetherand that is only 1/1000.Mine drops out 400gr.at 30-1
How is that new .40-65 shooting for you?Lp.

I have only had it out once using as cast and 58 grain goes cartridge with win prime.  It shot about 2 minute groups at 300 meters.  I made a jury rigged expander and powder compression die just so I could play.  I hope to have it running strong(around a minute of angle) for first shoot.  Thanks for the feedback guys enjoy your weekend.

That sounds good S-N  .I like the .40 calibers.I just hope the Shiloh .40-70 I have on order shoots as good as the .40-65.I'm getting ready to place a nother order for the no1 in .50-90.I know it's going to wack me with about 29lbs of recoil with a 640 gr bullet. If not it will be a .45-2.6.Kirk at Shiloh will probly let me try one before I place the order to see if my 63yr old shoulders can still take it.My .45-120had 23 lbs of recoil I thought that was verry exceptable.

Say on that top punch I'm using,my bullet is like a postell. The one that you got is it like the one in the Shiloh catalog?or is like the postell?Look in the Mid Way bullet casting catalog or there web site they have several different ogive stiles pictured you can pick one out.Lp.

Lead pot,  My bullet looks like the rcbs bps bullet .  I feel dumb but I can't remeber what style they call that.   I had to give up the heavy recoil thing, just to much pain.  I hope that this 40-65 is going to keep me in  the game.  I don't care for the thought of taking a bunch of prescription drugs just play one day a month.  This 40 caliber is my last frontier in staying with this game and I sure do hope it works.

Sharps Nut.
Well I understand pain :( Two years ago They fixed my shoulder I had a tendon tear loose and they had to pull it back up drill a hole and sew it back on.They said It would be six months before I would even think about pulling a trigger again.I was on the range at the end of the first week shooting my .22 left handed off sand bags with my arm taped to my chest.
I like the .40-65 it's mild and it hits the mark.I used the lighter bullets but I found the 400+worked the best in my Browning.Lp.
