I bought two diff. matte finish guns this year...A new rem. ADL & a used Win. model 70 stealth..Both guns came with matte blue finish..I thought great easy to care for..I was wrong ...The rough surface does not seem to hold a bit of oil for any lenght of time. Consequently I see a slight rust haze forming on various parts from time to time..The worst is the bolt handles but this week I saw a nasty reddish haze on the floor plate of the stealth...Question is do you guys treat this metal finish any differant than bright blue?? The silicon cloth nor an oiy rag really seems to keep these guns rust free.Any suggestions??.mike in ct

Have you tried RemOil with Teflon?

Be sure to remove all human oil from the weapon. That is the main cause of rust on weapons. This is exceptionally common on the bolt handle and magazine plate, because that is the metal parts the human hand touches the majority of the time.

I always buy traditional blue for field use with the exception of a few.

I think 7mm Woodsman hit the nail on the head. You might have a condition with your skin where you have a ph that is slightly acidic and moist. If not, then be aware of where you're storing your guns. I prefer to use dessicant like calcium chloride in the closet where I store my treasures. Also, use a slight constant breeze from a small fan to keep the air moving. The RemOil w/ teflon works well as does my favorite.....good ole Vasoline! For short-term storage I really like to use Ballistol spray (absorbs the water) and a silicone treated storage sock.
Now, if you do see signs of Fe2O3 (rust) get out the 0000 steelwool and the RemOil and start rubbing it out ASAP!

Pull the stock from rifle. Totally degrease it with acetone or alcohol after you plug up all holes you don't want filled. Spray it with Rustoleum paint in flat black or better yet over a precoat of rust red primer. Set the metal in a hot vehicle on a sunny day after paint dries to kinda bake it on.

No more rust, no more outside clean up and it looks pretty much the same as the Remington ADL finishes. I did an old Rem. Model 7 that way over 20 years ago. It has never been wiped with anything to prevent rust since and is as pristine as when done. I'd guess 95% of paint is still in place from the original painting but it can be touched up if needed.

Mike, I've seen the EXACT same characteristics from matte blued finished rifles.

I for one, would NEVER buy a matte blue finished rifle. Its been my personal experience that stainless and bright blued finishes always hold up far better to corrosion than matte blued rifles.

Overall, I generally stick with stainless steel rifles! :wink:

You may want to try an anti-corrosion product like Outers metal-seal. I also understand that Breakfree CLP is an excellent anti-corrosion oil that can be wiped onto metal.

Has anyone tried the Rusteloum on a lever gun? Specifically, the receiver?

Does the loading gate scratch easily?
