Accquired 44 mag Redhawk, need load info please.
« on: April 06, 2005, 12:00:17 PM »
Just got a 7 1/2" redhawk 44 mag.I am looking for some info on hunting loads(deer mostly).I'm used to rifle/hand rifle rounds, nosler BT's,spire points ect,all jacketed. Sounds like most hunt with cast bullets(that don't expand?).Also bullet lube?when, where, how?Bullet weight? I've been shooting 180 gr Remingtons and 240 gr Wins(wally worlds only options) for fun and to get a supply of cases. Also I have a box of cci bird shot left over from an ex contender bbl,can I shoot it through a revolver? Thanks SGB

SGB
I shoot 3 44 mags and one is the Redhawk 7.5 scope model also a 5.5 Redhawk. Load 240 gr jhp and jsp for them at near max. I have just tried hard cast 240 at levels under 1100 these are w/o gas checks. I will back these down some. I think a 44 is a big hole in a animal, so if you do your part in placing the shot it (deer) is going down. 240 gr seems to be the favorite for white tail, I think a 180-200 would work fine for me, our ave shot is -60yds. I am going to work on the hard cast for hunting this year in hopes of getting a hog hunt down the road where the hard cast really works.

For deer I use 240 gr. Hornady XTP over 19.5 gr. of 2400.  Very accurate and deadly round.  :D

i shoot 21.0gr of Alliant 2400 with 240gr hornady xtp's out of my 7 1/2" ss redhawk. they chronied at 1500fps and shoot very accurate.

havn't loaded any H110 in it yet, but i'm gonna get around to trying it also. i've shot the 2400 powder for years.

I load for 3 .44 mags. that I own and several for friends. I also load from .38 sp. to .500 mag. For hot loads I load only Win. 296. It gets the most velosity for the least presure and seems to get good accuracy in every gun I`ve shot it in. H-110 is about the same powder, but I seem to be able to buy the 296 cheaper. For plinking loads I load only Bulleyes and cast bullets.
For deer I load the Serria 240 gn. JHP. It has the best combonation of accuracy and terminal preformance of any bullet I`ve tried. The Rem. HP have excellant termanial preformance , but are not quite as accurate. The Hornady XTP`s are just as accurate, but are to hard for handgun velosities in the .44 mag. I`ve never hunted deer with cast bullets. Hard cast bullet are great if you need alot of penitration, but I`ve only had 1 240 gn. JHP bullet that did not go clear through the deer. It was shot at a deer at 135 yrds. and hit the deer in the left rear quater and was just under the skin of the right frount shoulder. I shot 1 deer with a 180 grn. Serria bullet and the bullet failed, exploded on impact with a shoulder hit. Ruined alot of meat and did not kill the deer.

I use a SRH in 44 magnum for white tails. I have used JSP and JHP. Both did the job very well. My longest shot and subsequently only recovered bullet was with a JHP at about 60 yards. The bullet entered behind the left shoulder and travelled through the heart up and under the skin infront of the right shoulder maybe 18 inches.

I tried the JHP because I always shot through the deer. I never had a problem finding them as they didn't go far. Either way, I would suggest an expanding bullet. Penatration should not be a problem on Whitetail deer with a 240 grain bullet.

In both my SBH 7.5" and my marlin 44 mag rifle the hornady 240 XTP powered by 23.8 gr of H110 provides and incredibley accurate and potent round.

Ditto the load but, I only get around 1350fps chronographed from my S&W 6 1/2" Classic.

240gr. Hornady XTPs, 22.9gr. of 296, W-W cases, Federal Mag primers work well in my Ruger SRH.

As usual I'll be the different one   SRH with a 320 LBT LFNGC, LBT blue lube with H110. Run them at max vel and things don't go far after being hit. Works great on mule deer.
