Ruger Redhawk factory Rings
« on: May 05, 2005, 05:21:32 PM »
Does anyone have any experience with the Ruger factory rings they ship with the Redhawk?  I am looking at using them to mount a scope on the .44 mag.

Thanks,
Doug

I have a RH Scoped model that came with 20mm rings (1"). Its a bit small for me and I wanted a 30mm red dot. Buying from Ruger its a +$76 item in SS. They are available from Midway and others for less than half that price. I have not had to hone the rings, but you have to be aware of the measurement between the rings as it may not accommodate all scopes or red dots. The rings are set and not adjustable to the distance in between.

Aren't they the same ones that they ship with the Super Blackhawk Hunter??  I ended up lapping the ones on my SBHH; they were off a tad.  That being said, they seem to work great...scope seems to return to zero after taking off the scope and putting it back on.  Like Jim said, other makers make the Ruger-style rings much cheaper....  Think they were around $30 in the Natchez catalog.

I have SRH in .44 and 454 - 4 set of rings and 4 scopes.  None of them return to zero.  The first shot is always between 4" and 6" too high at 100 yds - and a little to right.

Have a 44 & 454 with factory rings and both will return to within a 1/2 inch or so after removal. I always lap or at least check them for alighnment and take a small file or stone to break any sharp edges that could ding/scratch the scope. Some are better than others. One thing to remember is that they are matched at the factory and you should keep them oriented the same when you take them apart. A marking pen helps with this. I've seen guys just unscrew everything throw it on the bench and then wonder why the rings are off or  they crushed the scope. As the saying goes
