red dot size?
« on: April 27, 2005, 02:27:17 PM »
For you red dot users what dia. red dot do you find best for deer hunting to 50 yds? And do any of you guys have problems loosing the dot due to sunlight?  I took a cheap $30.00 tasco red dot off the kids 22 and put it on my SBH but had lots of trouble finding the target only when it slid accross the black target dot was i able to see it.

I don't like them for hunting. Variations in ambient light cause too many problems in picking out the dot. I've even had reflections of the dot that looked like a fuzzy version of the real dot. If I had used that, I would have missed my target.  I think they'd be fine in dim light that doesn't vary much. Anything 4moa or smaller is a good dot size for me.

I have never had a problem finding the dot in bright sunlight. I usually have the dot brightness turned up.  :D

I would think that most any dot size less than or equal to 5moa would work well for you in most situations.  Most of the nicer red dot sights have filters that you can screw-on in bright sunlight...which will improve the sight picture and eliminate most/all of do "fuzziness", which is common if you increase the dot brightness outdoors.

Tanoose,

Is the diameter you are referring to the tube diameter or the size of the actual red dot?  The tube on my red dot site is 30mm and the red dot size is 4 moa.  I use this site on my Ruger SBHH 44 Mag and have not have a problem finding the dot in bright sunlight.  My site has 11 different brightness levels.

Most of your worries can be cured by buying  a quality scope. Mine is an Ultra, it has four different dot sizes and 11 brightness setting on the reostat. Something in this mix should fit every bill I come accross? But, be aware, their customer service stinks!

Whitetailer i was talking about the actual red dot itself , on the highest setting #11 i could not find the dot on anything light . I probibly would not have a problem on game but what a pain when tring to get the dot on a 2" circle, and it wasn't just me two of my friend had the same problem .  I think i'll sight it in indoors and then try some deer targets (natural color). Which model allows for 4 different dot sizes?

tanoose, I shoot outdoors all the time with my red-dots. My targets are white with a big red 4 inch circle. I don't have a problem with them at all. I find the red-dot very quick. I use Ultra-dot and Millet.  :D

I have an older Ultra Dot and have never had a problem finding the dot. It does have a filter but I usually don't use it. It has a 4 min dot and that's big enough for me.  For fine target work at 100 yards a smaller dot would be nice but for deer sized game it's just fine. Makes a good rangefinder too.

Duffy - a little more on how to use it as a range finder............

Just like the reticle in a scope. In the case of my ultra dot I know that the dot covers 4 inches at 100 yards.  If I pull up on a deer and it covers his whole shoulder or all of the neck I'm pretty darn sure he's too far away for the 44,(roughly 200+ yards).  It's a bit crude but once you get the hang of it you can guesstimate pretty close and quite quickly. It also helps to know the approxamate sizes of your game too.  I'm a terrible judge of distance (one eye) and always figure the target is closer than it is so this helps out some.

I use an aimpoint with the brightness dialed all the way up during the day. I have never "lost" the dot. In the morning and evening I turn it down some.  The thing is the brighter I get it the bigger it appears. The result is down game.
