Do I buy back the Weatherby???
« on: April 17, 2005, 07:13:23 PM »
A couple years ago I had a custom rifle built on a Rem 700 in .340 Weatherby, specifically for elk. The thing was an albatross around my neck---wouldn't shoot 2" moa among other things.  While spending a couple years trying to get it right I came across a Weatherby Mark V, matte finish, synthetic (injection molded) stock in .338 Win Mag on sale for $380.00.  Not needing the Weatherby since I had the custom gun but seeing the value, I snatched the Weatherby.  A friend really wanted it so I sold it to him for $400. Now he's being sent overseas with the military and has to sell it: he'll give it back to me for $400....he's shot it 20 times and of all things, its a tack driver with whatever factory ammo he's using.

I dumped the custom gun, leaving me needing a bigger bore. The Weatherby doesn't weigh much, leaving me to wonder about only one thing, that being recoil. I plan on 225 grainers, but still think this might be a brutal kicker. I don't like brakes.

Being this rifle would be for elk or bigger, anyone have thoughts what to do here? Its an excellent value but I don't want to get the snot pounded out of me either.  I could shoot it first.....

Just mulling this over

It might kick shooting it off a bench, but I doubt you will notice it in a hunting situation.

Like Ramrod said you won't feel it while hunting. I have a Sako in 375H&H. It has a thin recoil pad on it and it is a light gun.

I do not have a problem with the recoil. But then again while on the bench, I use a Past recoil pad.  :D

If you're worried about recoil you should avoid it. It is a lot more than you need for elk.

But that said, I'll buy the darned thing. I'm all about recoil!

Rogue Ram,

My first though is why haven't you bought it back?  Second is you can cure that "monster" recoil with a C&H Research mercury recoil insert.  Go to http://98.net/chr/ for the complete line of inserts available.  I use them in all my big bores from .340 Weatherby to .450 Rigby.  They work like a dream.  Lawdog

I would go for it.  Get the mods done like suggested before shooting.  If you develop bad habits/flinching while practice shooting off of the bench you will do the same thing when you pull up on an elk.

I'll take the checkbook to work with me tomorrow and buy it back.  The custom I referred to was hell on wheels with recoil.......7 1/2 pounds in .340 Weatherby, with scope, sling, etc. With no brake this thing was beyond any experience I can describe. I can tolerate quite a bit, but .375s don't even come close to the above gun.

I agree, hunting situations it may not be bad, especially with the suggestions above. I AM curious to see just what he was shooting those groups with. I have an outing coming in 2 weeks and will post back here how it does.   :D

RR,

As you stated the problem is the "7 1/2 pounds in .340 Weatherby".  My Mark V Deluxe weighted 8 lbs. 11 oz. when I got it and after adding scope/mounts/sling it weighted a bit over 10 lbs.  Now that I have added the C&H Research 11 oz. mercury insert it weights 10 lbs. 12 oz.  A much easier rifle to spend a day doing load work on at the range.  Lawdog
