While out in west Texas on vacation, north of Big Bend last week, I stopped and pickup a hunting license at a hardware store for a grand total of $22. bucks. Had thoughts of doing a little rabbit hunting at a wildlife range nearby on the spur of the monent and late afternoon with my 12 yr. old son. Made it to the range and signed in the registration card and keeping the card regis. part with me as directed on instructions at the entry shack(house). However it was getting to late, so we just wanted to drive in the range and check it out for a few mintues. As the friendly park ranger pulls up and curious as why we're there, cause it's getting dark. The ranger is plenty nice enough as we chatted a bit and then ask for a hunting license. I show him the $22.00 hunting license and he tells me I really needed a annual hunting license for $48.00. Was this just cause of this particular wild life range or should I have purchased something different to begin with? Rabbit season was still good till the end of Feb. with birds.

I'm thinking that you were at the Elephant Mountain Wildlife Management Area.

You need to buy an Annual Public Hunting permit to hunt in any of the state's WMA's.

That's correct on Elephant Park, thanks for the info., and now I'm the wiser. Ranger also mentioned also that the Sheep were lambing right now and that's partly why no driving tours at this time. I'll be more careful about calling ahead next time to find out what's going on. :roll:

Just wanted to be clear, you need both a regular Huntng License, AND the APH to hunt the WMA's...22$ + $49.

It's kind of expensive just go poke holes in rabbits in a WMA.

we were'nt much of a threat to the rabbit population, however would like to tent camp and hike/explore. The Ranger said we could hike everywhere except on the top of Elephant. Thanks again for the info.

Rough, yet beautiful country. For several years we spent Thanksgiving and Christmas down there. I usually park my RV in Alpine and drive from there, or when possible, at Study Butte to be closer to the action. I am off road rockhounding all over Terlingua Ranch and from Study Butte all the way to Presidio. We found an old camp site of Pancho villa's on some land between Terlingua and Lajitas that is owned (?) by the folks that own the Woodard Ranch. Lots of arrowheads and artifacts.

I have taken a few Mule deer there and shot a few quail. The country is just too rough for an old guy to drag a deer out. There are lots of lions in that area, over the years I've seen 10-12. It's a good place to take the kids to give them a taste of nature.

The drive between Terlingua and Presidio is spectacular. It's nice up in the Chisos Basin also.

I've got 60 acres north of Terlingua, east of the Solitario on Saltgrass Draw.

Beautiful country, but it ain't for those who don't want to work for it, that's for sure.

Those mulies sure do seem to like it though.

I was on a lease out there back in the 60's. It is rougher than hand milled lumber and tougher than a $2 steak. You got to want to hunt really bad too go out there. Of course the experience is wonderful and, I guess if you are young enough, it doan seem so bad til years later.
Learned the value of a pack animal and how to use one while on this lease.
