The new boy (SP) on the block
« on: April 19, 2005, 03:55:01 AM »
This is an SP that has interchangeable barrels (switch in less than a minute) and has an extremely strong action. The "Thor" has a number of cartridge options, a strong ejector and a light trigger pull. The action is an artillery-eclipsing block lock which makes it very strong. Barrels are 14 inches, but plans (I think) are to make some 16 inch barrels for the WSM cartridges and maybe some others.

It almost looks like the old Pachmyer  Dominator.

Lemme go ahead and throw this out before the thread gets going ...  beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Personally ... please note that caveat .... personally, this is not an attractive gun to me, no matter what caliber it comes in. However, form follows function, and with an action like a cinder block, you don't have a lot of other options.

There is the bragging rights of shooting short magnums from a pistol, but I'm guessing the carpal tunnel damage might take the edge of that experience.

I was thinking that the 6.5x57R would be a very accurate and good game getter.  I have several 6.5-284's so I have a bunch of bullets already.

BTW,
Braggin rights have nothing to do with it for me.  It is all a matter of performance downrange on elk sized animals that moved me from from my 284 Win XP to a larger case.  In fact I would have went with the WSM, but it didn't exist at the time I had the Patriot built.
If a WSM SP is set-up right pain is not part of the issue.  With a Vais brake my 7.82 Patriot (Lazzeroni SA case that is bigger than the WSM with a 15.75 inch sporter barrel) has much less recoil than a heavy loaded S&W 44 mag or my old FA 454 pushing 300 grainers @ 1775 fps.
Longer distances with good bullet performance is what has pushed me to the larger cap SP's.
Like I said, MY Freedom Arms 454 always kicked worse than any of my SP's

xphunter - man, that sure is the new guy on the block.  It looks like it would be a hoot to shoot and as with Redhawk it does remind me to the older Dominator.  I wonder if there are any future plans to downsize it slightly for pistol length cartridges??  Mikey.

HEY,Mikey! the 45-70 IS a pistol cartridge! By the way ,carpal tunnel is definetly a consideration when using heavy recoil guns .Even impact tools will eventually take their toll.

Mikey,
I think there could be a possibility of a 10 inch barrel if enough consumers wanted it for straight wall cartridges.  Usually, a manufacturer will add something if they are convinced there is a market for it.

I do not have one.  One day I will.  Once I know of some dealerss set-up to sell them I could give you an idea of they are charging.  I'm not an FFL holder, so I don't know the difference between cost and retail.
It is a definite goal of mine to get a Thor, in the future.  Will let you guys know when a desire becomes a reality

I just got offf the phone with E.A.A. (European American Armory) 800-536-4442.
I learned that they do have some "Thor" Single Shot Pistols in stock currently.

If this is something you are interested in, if you are a dealer or you can have your dealer contact them and they will direct to wholesalers to purchase the pistol.
Cartridges at this time are (All are blue, 14 inch barrels with no fluting or porting):
223
45-70
375 Win.
44Mag.

I ran a google  search on EAA and found them. They list the THOR for $1100 .It comes in a bunch of calibers ,including 7mm Rem and 7-08. It  has an integral scope mount.

That is a large chunk of change, but I am interested to see what the real world retail price is.  It's design saves you from spending money on things one would normally spend on a TC product.  To top that it can handle cartridges that the Encore cannot handle with top end loads like the WSM cartridges.  I am going to save judgement until I get to see and shoot one.
Accuracy, Performance, and Field Practicality are more important than aesthetics for me.  Cost is something each of us decides for ourselves what we can afford.
