Stainless Steel vs. Blue

All my rifles and shotguns so far have blued barrels and I'm considering the next rifle being SS.  I'm just curious how bad the SS will stand out when trying to move through the woods or sit concealed with deer moving close by.  I'm leaning towards the SS mainly for something a little different as well as for the durability of it.  What is everyones opinion on a stainless steel finish for a hunting rifle?

I have killed a lot of deer with stainless rifles, from 20-300 yards, the deer did not seem to notice that they where shot with a shiney gun. Most of the SS rifles today have a nice bead blast finish to them, that will not reflect. I hunt in MN. and during deer season here, it can be 50 degrees and sunny or -10 degrees and snowing. The Mark V Deluxe goes out on the sunny day, other than that it is SS. I really do like the SS rifles. You think how lucky we are today to have such a vast array of rifles and ammo to chose from. A peron can get handloaded performance with all that great ammo, and the rifle selection is just unreal, with most rifles shooting MOA or better right out of the box. It sure has changed since I started hunting 30 years ago. Sorry for the ramble, got a little carried away.

I have been slowly going to all stainless steel guns.  They definately hold up better to wet hunts and 100% better whenever salt spray is involved.  If you really think its too shiny you can dull it up with car wax past, just don't wipe it off, or good old spray paint.  Stainless isn't all that much shiner than hi gloss blued steel.

I like stainless guns. I have two stainless rifles. My Ruger M77 had a shinney finish on the barrel so I took a synthetic sanding pad and gave it a brushed finish look. My M70 had a matte finish from the factory. I don't seem to have a problem being picked out by game due to the stainless finish,

I have both Stainless and blued guns, more blue than Stainless. I just like the look of blued guns. But a far as game seeing the Stainless gun, I don't think it will be a problem. Unless you go out with a shiny nickle finish.  :eek:  :)

Gentlemen don't take this too serious.  If deer or other wildlife don't see shiny objects, stainless or blued, why are we all wearing camoflage clothing?  Buckfever

The game might or might not see it, but I have to look at it too.
I will buy a stainless steel gun when the makers learn how to blue them. :)

Actually. color is not the question in hunting clothing, it is breaking up our outline.  Most camo color is more for the hunter than the hunted.

I have had a couple of S.S barrel guns.  Hunted whitetail and Antelope with them.  Both had a matt finish so there was no potential for glare. Both were used to take animals.  I don't have either anymore, just seemed too cold to me.  I prefer wood and blue.  But I will also say that in rotten weather I sometimes wish I was carrying S.S and Synthetic over my other rifles.

I don't know about you guys but the game I'm around doesn't seem to care if I'm carrying a blued or a stainless rifle... they seem to be able to spot me no matter what! Heck, just last November I was sitting behind a brush pile when a big buck comes out of some spruce about 30 yards away. I was being really really quite... and then something must have gotten into my sinus' because I sneezed (turning my head away from bucky, of course) and when I looked up he was staring straight at me! I couldn't believe it, I was being so quiet. I figure it must have been the glare off my scope that caught his eye. What do you guys think?

Probably the movement from your sneeze.  I am glad that you had manners enough though to turn your head away from the buck when you sneezed :lol:  :lol: most guys leave their manners at home when they go hunting.

I bought a Ruger All-Weather M77 and the group of guys I went Elk hunting with told my they could follow my progress along the hillside by the flashes it gave off.  Seeing I already carry a signal mirror to signal planes flying at 40,000 feet I see no need to carry another.  Besides that plastic stock sounded off like a kids toy drum any time something bumped against it.  As for being low maintenance I was taught a long time ago how to care for my weapons.  In all the years I have hunted in the rain/snow or whatever I have never had any rust or a stock warp.  Make mine blue and walnut thank you.  Lawdog

Don't take this to serious. If wildlife DO see shiny objects, stainless or blued, how did O'Conner, Keith, Page, Gates ect., ever kill anything?
