Dove story
« on: March 26, 2005, 05:32:11 PM »
Haven't seen any dove stories, so here's one. A long time ago, at least 30 years, I was out dove hunting with my Dad and 4 other guys. It was almost sundown and we were all walking single file down a dirt road  back to where the cars were parked. Well, here comes a single "Grey Rocket" right down the road about shoulder high. As it flew by, each hunter unloaded 3 rounds each at the bird. I was last in line and I unloaded on it too. At the last shot. the dove dove down between the  strands of the barbed wire fence, back flipped and went down. Of course everyone is yelling "My bird!!!!". I said "Nobody hit it". Everybody else said "No way". I found the bird and plucked it. There was not a mark on the bird. No pellet holes after 18 rounds of 1 1/4 oz loads.Apparently the dove hit one of the strands of barbed wire and broke its neck.

My brother was about 11 or 12 yrs old when we took him dove hunting for the first time. We left him in an orange tree orchard near a grain elevator thinking he would get some good shooting there. After a few hours of hearing a lot of shooting from his area we went over to check on him. We approached him and asked what all the shooting was about. He asid he had limited out very easily. Guideing us to an orange tree he showed us a huge pile of Barn Pigeons, not one dove. :-D
