wanting to get a reasonable priced heavy gun (bull barrel) for bench shooting and maybe some predator and whitetail doe hunting. the savage 12FV with its 26" barrel chambered in .243 really catches my attention. anyone own one of these or have opinions on savage boltactions in general. i've never owned or shot a savage.

I have its lefty counterpart, the Savage 12FLV in stainless steel, in .22-250.  It's a few years old and doesn't have the accu-trigger.  I'm very happy with it.  It shoots most factory ammo well and does even better with handloads.  While I haven't shot the .243, my .22-250 shoots all reasonable handloads (45-55gr w/ medium powders) either well or very well.  I don't care for the plastic stock, but at the time, that was the only choice for leftys.  Now that the Model 12 low profile is available in a laminated stock for southpaws, that would be my first choice.  The bull barrel is heavy and the plastic stock light, so the gun is a little front heavy.  Perhaps it's because I started shooting with Savages; but, I like the tang-mounted, 3-position safety better than the behind-the-bolt style on most other rifles.  The pre-accutrigger on my gun is a bit heavy and has some creep.  I'd love to get my hands on a lefty model 12 low-pro in .204 ruger!

I have the 12FV in 223 and spent part of yesterday testing handloads.   I probably had more fun than is legal in this state but it was well worth it.

The 12FV with the Accutrigger is an excellent shooter. S-buster does a good job of summarizing the 12FV though I don't have any real problems with the stock. While it looked a bit "funky" to me at first, it works as advertised and I find the Accutrigger to be great. The ability to safely adjust it to my preference is a plus to me.

Safe shooting.

You won't be sorry with the Savage.  Accurate right out of the box.  Lawdog

I got my first Savage (10 FP) in late January. It is a .223 with the Accu-trigger and it is a good one. I think the Savage rifles live up to their reputation of being sub-moa right out of the box as mine had a four shot group (all holes touching) on the third group we shot with it and was the factory Winchester white box 45 gr bullets. With my reloads, it shoots the 55 gr Nosler BT in .500" or less pretty often.

I am not only satisfied, I will buy another Savage at some point in the near future.
