Rem 700 Mt or Model 7 Lam SS in 7mm-08?
« on: March 19, 2005, 02:32:42 AM »
I'm considering getting a 7mm-08 and these 2 are in the running....with a few others.

Is there any advantage or disadvantage of one over the other.  I've had 700's, but never any 7's.  Any feedback on the model 7 would be great.

I like the shorter 20 inch barrel on the model 7.  To me, it's an advantage even though I know some people prefer the 22 of the 700.

Let me know if anyone has any feeback on either of these.

Thanks guys,

JCM

I have a model 7 SS in  308. Nice rifle for rainy, wet  hunting. I have 700s also, but like the 7 in the woods.
Shoot straight , shoot often.

Hard choice really. My first model 7 was one of the originals in 7-08 not long after they came out. We still have it and now my wife owns it with the stock cut for her. It's not all that accurate really seldom shooting under 1.5" at 100 yards and not always that well. But in perhaps 25 years of use by me, our oldest son and now her it's never missed and never required a follow up shot. Pretty good record.

When I gave it to her I bought an SS synthetic stock Model 7 in 7-08 and loved it. Very accurate and deadly. But atlas I hate plastic stocks. I tried to get one of the newly issued laminated stocks to go on it but Remington wanted almost as much for the stock alone as the entire rifle. So I set about trying to locate one of the new laminated stock model 7s. No luck.

One day I walked in the store and saw an LSS Mtn. Rifle in 7-08 on the shelf and it went home with me. I've not regretted getting it rather than the M7 laminated really but then I'd have been just as happy with the model 7. There is 2" of barrel and about 1/4 pound weight difference in them. That's it. Not much make or break one or the other.

Get the one you like best and you'll never regret it whichever of them you chose.

I looked at a 7-08 SS Mt. Rifle..yesterday...a guy traded it in on another rifle...it was all set up nice too...with a  Silver Nikon Monarch 3x9 in stainless adjustable bases...I shouldered it a few times...it seemed like a super nice rifle to own...the guy traded it in on one of those high dollar bean field rifles...didn't make sense to me...but it was his $$$$$$...

I have the Model 7 in 308 and I am selling it and getting the Mountain Rifle LSS in 7mm-08.

The Model 7 just did not fit me right.  The wrist is too fat and the gun is just a little too short in the stock proportions.  The Moutain Rifle has a much slimmer and slightly longer stock profile.  It just feels and handles better.

The Mountain rifles also have a smoother bolt and the trigger has alot less creep than the Model 7's, although I'm sure that there are those that would disagree.  But from the guns that I have handled at various gun shops this is certainly true.

Like Graybeard, I have had one of the original Model 7's in 7mm-08. I have had it for 15 years, and have shot many deer with that rifle. I would buy the 700 today, for the reasons previously mentioned. I can't see enough difference to give up on my old favorite, though!
