My long barrel 45/70 has a lot of smoke remaining in the barrel after fireing. Using varget and 300 gr bullets. I have never noticed this in other guns and was wondering if this is due to lower pressures and large expansion ratios of this gun. I noticed it when I tried to look down the barrel and could not see thru it untill I lightly blew out a cloud of smoke. Just curious, not worried

I notice the same thing when I shoot my Ruger #1 in 45-70 and it has a shorter barrel. When I shoot my Shiloh Sharps with black powder and put the blow tube in the chamber it make a nice smoke signal. :-D

I just have to remember not to take a breath when I have my mouth on the blow tube, or I get a lung full of BP smoke. :eek:

Please "capture" and store some for me as I have an old computer that needs it.... It has been my experience that smoke makes electronic equipment function... cause when it "gets out" ... my electronics cease to function!!!! Thanks ... and I recommend you move this post to classifieds as you will get more response... Marty

What kind of Lube ya using? When I loaded some loads for my 45/70
( Remington 1902 Roller with a 32 inch full octagon Green Mountain barrel )using 3031 powder and Lee Liquid alox on my cast Lee bullets
( THe .459 hollow based ones 405 grain) I noticed I got a brown smoke that I figured was the Lee Liquid Alox lube as I had these lubed pretty good. I may have gotten some smoke but they shot well and no leading. Jim

I may be wrong but its appears Racepres has some electrical back round. The joke (among electricians) is that the only time some piece of electrical equipment fails is when the Â“magic smokeÂ” escapes. ItÂ’s an inside joke that can be confusing to people who donÂ’t deal with electrical problems, burned up motors, and controls day in and day out.

MickinColo, I worked as an Industrial Mechanic for 12 years and work on a lot of electrical equipment and worked closely with Electricians and never heard of it. I am very familiar with burnt motors and controls. :? I did not get his move it to the Classified section either. :? I guess it must be some kind of inside joke.

don't know if the smoke is magic .. but I know that it makes electric and electronic stuff work. Note that if the smoke gets out , that the equipment quits working. Therefor if you put "smoke" for sale in the classified section you may be able to sell it to Electronic /electrical repair folks. Or I may get some for the wifs .32 mag , because if it don't smoke and stink a bit after she fires it she is dissappointed and accuses me of "downloading" it.. Marty

I first heard about the "magic smoke" about 5 or 6 years ago when I first got into computer repair, it's quite a common phrase among electronics gurus when a problem arises and is undiagnosed! :eek:

I'm an Automotive Electrical Engineer in the Detroit area (big three) and am well aware of the "magic" smoke you speak of.
Don't EVER let the stuff out ! :wink: :lol:

It's a virtual guarantee that if you let the 'magic' smoke out of an electronic device, it will never operate again as designed unless a complete overhaul is performed.
This term is more common among electrical Engineers than among Electricians and Electric repair technicians.

It was a really crappy day here today.... decided to waste it !!! Anyway looking for smoke in inordinate quantities is challenging.. None of my rifles really "smoke" alot ...as mentioned earlier the shotguns were quite "smokey". Fooled around and decided it was at least partially barrel size ... found that I can achieve "max smoke" w/ my 45 win mag contender bbl loading 45acp's w/ the slowest powders that, seem almost appropriate (very low velocity for the amt of powder burned) under a plain based cast bullet lubed w/ lee liquid alox. WHY!!! I dunno... but that's what I got .... normal powders = normal smoke BTW... I woulda done some w/ black powder, but I am too lazy to clean up after it.. I'm sure it will generate the desired efffect tho. Marty

Must be the liquid alox smoking as if you read my post I got the same results a brown smoke that lingered in the barrel and when I opened my breech block on my Roller the smoke would roll out. Jim

That would probably be a nasty whiff to say the least. Could ruin a guy's group for a while. Ouch.

And I do like the magic smoke comments to.

As to the original question. I see smoke hanging in my .22's as well as shotguns as mentioned before. May be a lower pressure thing.

It will happen when you and a buddy are talking and shooting at the same time. He may ask you a question when you have your mouth on the blow tube. It is instinctive to inhale before you speak. :eek:

I'm not by my manuals currently (pretending I'm working). Is Varget kind of slow for the cal?? Sounds kind of hoakie but I can't help wonder if maybe there is unburnt powder "smoldering" in the barrel?? BTW smokeless powder really isn't... touch off a small pile in an ashtray and see!! Marty
