hillbill,
We have a 03 Chevy 2500 HD 4x4 with the Duramax and the Allison transmission, that thing pulls like a Mack truck. Our total weight of truck trailer and tractors is 19690 lbs, we have put 10,000 miles on it so far with out any problems at all.  I talked to a guy I know that is a certified GM tech, he said anything that needs to be done on anything that GM makes they can do at any dealership. I strongly recommend getting a duramax and Allison trany. The shift placement is right on and the towing mode makes it pull like no other. And the best part about it, it is soooo quite. I have had many guys ask me if it is really a diesel our just a fake tag when I leave it run at the gas stations. It’s not so quite now since we put 4” custom exhaust on it, made it even more powerful. I know of one guy that used his 02 GMC 3500 HD to try to plow his garden, the truck got it done, but about 10 days later the transmission was making funny noises (I wonder why?!) His wife was driving it in town so she stopped in at the local dealership, the put it on the computer for her and told her the transmission was just about to go out, they gave her a rental truck to take home and put in the new trany in two days!! And it was all covered by the warranty!! I don’t know of anyone that has had one worked on after the warranty ran out (it has a 100,000 mile warranty on the engine and transmission)

Hope this helps a lil,
