something special
« Reply #30 on: March 23, 2005, 11:13:02 AM »
It sounds to me that you are looking for something out of the norm. If I was you, look at HS Precision. They have an excellant reputation here in SD and I guess everywhere else. If you want something special that looks like a million bucks Dakota Arms.

Then when it's time to pass them on to your grandkids they will have something like a Belgian Browning.

:cb2: If ya want something a little different in .308 or .270, then try it in lever action. That'll stand out in a crowd.

I wuz thinkin' how nice that'd be in 7mm-08 . . . .

:D  :D  Well now, Old Griz, that is a fine rifle to be sure.  I've always had a soft spot for Brownings.  I have to admit, I've never seen a guy with a  lever .308  8) .

If I was going with a lever, I'd have a tough time not going with a 30-30 or a 32 special.  Actually, my father has a model 94 32 special that I will someday inherit.  I'd sure take him over the rifle - or anything else for that matter...

I digress.

I just love a bolt...  I guess there's some truth to me wanting something "different."  Everybody has a 30-06.  With good reason for sure.  It's certainly Mr. Versatility.  However, the .308 really isn't giving up much (if anything) over the .270 or the 06.

I'm taking the two hour drive this weekend to a BIG gun store.  I should finally get the chance to shoulder some Sakos, Tikas, and CZs.  Just keeping the HS on the back burner... 8)   The idea of a custom gun - especially if I'm only doing it once - is pretty appealing.  A Dakota is certainly out of my price range, but with a little "fuzzy math" on the wife, I could probably sneak into the HS price range.

Thanks again guys for all the great info.  I'll let you know what wow's me this weekend.  Sure do like the looks of the Sako 75.  It will be nice to put one to the shoulder.   :D  :D

:cb2: Good luck with that fuzzy math. My wife is too good with a calculator for me to drop over $2-3,000 on a new gun! I'd be afraid to take something that expensive hunting! I can hear my huntin' buddies now . . . "Hey Griz, let me see that thar new gun ya got. Is this tha one that (sorry, didn't mean to hit it gaist the tail gate) the one that you said (I betcha that scratch'll rub out) the one you said cost so dang much? Dang it sure dents easy nuff fer a high dollar gun."

Nim,

Buy a .308 Winchester and you will never regret it.

Also, I know that this sounds narrow, and lame, but, for $800 to $900, you can buy a real nice Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Featherweight, in .308.   Why spend your time fooling with anything else?  If you want to put more money in it, have a McMillen fiberglass stock fitted to it or a new barrel.

You can spend lots and lots more on a custom or semi-custom rifle, and it won't be any better.  It sure won't have an action that is as smooth as glass, like the pre-64.

Just my opinion.

Jack O'Connor swore by the .270... particularly for North America. The .270 and the .375 H&H are the only two rifles you need to hunt the world. I grew up in Michigan and on November 15th you can always find me at camp in the U.P. And of course the .308 would be an excellent choice too. Very accurate and flexible as far as loads you can utilize.

But more to your question... If you get the Sako or the Weatherby you will never be wanting for a better rifle, to be sure. I'm glad to hear that you're going to handle them all side by side because raw bench-rest accuracy aside, a rifle that fits you is the rifle that will be the most accurate in the field... and that speaks to Big Paulie's comment about the Model 70. I am a stalwart supporter of the M70. To me, it is the best feeling rifle you can own. You should talk with the folk at the Winchester Custom shop to get a really tuned rifle. And even though we're not talking about hunting dangerous game, I am also a proponent of controlled round feeding. Push feed rifles are far more likely to jam, yet they offer no offsetting benefit in return. That, and the safety issue, are what keep me away from the Remingtons, which are otherwise VERY accurate rifles.

Mr. O'Connor was another huge fan of the Pre-'64 M70's... though I think Winchester's new incarnation is equally appealing.

Thanks guys for all the great info.

Too bad Uncle Sam has other plans for my $.  I found out on Friday that I owe a pretty good chunk to him.  Man, I sure wish I wouldn't have put this purchase off...

Anyway, I just can't swing the rifle I want right now.  It will have to wait until next year.  When it comes, it looks like it's going to be the Sako 75 in a .308

All was not lost though.  I was so set on buying a rifle, that it was killing me not to have a "new toy."  Ended up getting into a Marlin 917VSF.  I've been thinking about a .17 for a couple years now and finally decided to bite.  Looks like it's here to stay.  Can't wait until it comes in.

Unfortunately, the .308 is going to have to wait.

How crazy is that?  I started out thinking I would end up with a M77 .270 and I end up with a .17 cal Marlin :o

Thanks again.

Lawdog,
I really would like to know your beef with remington. I own five all fine shooters moa or better I did have aproblem with one that would only shoot their 100 gr corelokt bullets moa all other ammo 2-2.5" I called them up and was told to send it back. I got it back and now it's been a consistent .75 inch shooter. My 270, well no matter what ammo i feed it will shoot under MOA. I also love my browning A bolts Savages great shooter but to me they handle like club

Excellent idea, since Lawdog's experiences are the exact opposite of everyone else's when dealing with Remington customer service.
