Tang Sights

I traded for a Shiloh Sharps No. 1 Sporter in .45-70. The elevation on the vernier tang sight does not lock when the eyecup is tightened. What would be a good sight to replace this with?

Hi Jimbo, I agree wholeheartedly with Marsh.  For the money you can't beat the Ukranian sights.  Two of the best features of this sight are that you can read the scale on both sides of the sight, and the elevation threads are inside (between the upright posts) where they are protected from abuse.  

For the front sight, I really like the Baldwin.  It doesn't have windage adjustment, but the Spirit level is inside the globe.  This allows you to clearly see the bubble no matter what the lighting conditions.  An absolute necessity for long range shooting!!  Good luck with your choice.  Getting these rifles set up just right for you is about half the fun of shooting them.  Omaha

My rifles all sport MVAs. Having said that, my second choice would be the Parts Unknown Ukraine sights. They're very well made and they won't break the bank. Just not as pretty as the MVAs are.

For fronts, I'd take a long hard look at what you plan on doing. Both my LR guns have windgauge fronts on them, my new silhouette rifle doesn't. Don't need a lot of windage at 500 meters. There are times when the windage on the rear sight just isn't enough for LR though. Two years ago at the Qugley match there were quite a few folks holding "One Buffalo Left" :grin:

My experience with vernier sights is a bit limited, but this:  http://www.egunsmith.com/  is what I'm using.  They are priced with the better Italian stuff, but are superior than the ones I've seen and used.  I've never seen an MVA. Guess I need to get out more.

    Looks like I’ll have to wait till Q 2003 to get my hat. There’s just too many Goosies around here now that need my attention. I’ll hit you up for a hat AND a bowl of Eetofe(sp) in June!



    What ever you do, DON’T pump up rdnck anymore…….for his own sake! His heads getting so big now he can barely get it down on a rifle comb and see through the rear tang! That little shortened GOEX cap is starting to look like a beanie sitting on the melon of his!  

   Pretty soon he’ll be looking for a custom stock maker and getting the “X-tra Large” one size fits all caps!

Hi Jimbo,

If the sight is worth a dam you may want to call Lee Shaver of Lee Shaver Gunsmithing in Iantha,MO.  417-682-3330.  He rebuilds sights and also is making a new Soule Sight.  I sent him a old Italian sight that I was going to throw away and for $100 he rebuilt it into a top grade Soule Sight.  I put it on a  original Rolling Block and it is great.
I have a Steve Baldwin Soule Sight on my Shiloh Sharps and it is more than excelent. I also have the Baldwin Globe front sight with the level bubble inside and I have some trouble seeing the bubble in it sometime. I think I am going to change it for one with the level on the outside. I have the level on the outside of the globe on my High Wall and can see it very well.

Estimado Jimbo,

     I don't disagree with anything anyone has said so far except that I don't like the Parts Unknown sights.  You can't have everything.  

     HOWEVER, as I read your original post, your real concern is that sightcup doesn't lock the vertical adjustment.  The first thing I would do is go find a fiber or hard rubber washer to go between the cup and the staff.  When you tighten the eyecup, the flexible washer should press against both the staff and the rider to hold it in place.

     Coydog C..... I don't know if I can stand the new and improved version, but I promise to try!

Just got my heartburn back( that for you guys that don,t like hepburns) from lee shaver barreled to 38/55. Real happy with work. I also got his new tang site. A nice  job . I can read the marks real easy not etched on but cut deep. A blind man could read it.

I just wanted to add here that after waiting for over a week, I decided to call on my order for my Soule sight and front globe sight.  I'm glad I did, their e-mail internet service is down and has been.  They did not know it so my order that I placed back on 1/27 they didn't get even though the e-mail responder says they did.   So if you placed an order with Lee Shaver call them with your order number to confirm shipment.

Darryl is a nice guy who works in the office there.

They are going to get my order out now  :lol:

No reason to replace the sight just because the eyecup wont tighten. Simply remove the eyecup, find a thin washer sized to just fit over the threads, and sandwich it under the eyecup, and tighten down.
 This will solve your loose eyecup problem.
