The 22 LR is older than dirt and still get's the job done. The 5mm Rem Mag was supposed to be the death of the 22 LR, one died. Haven't tried the 17 HMR and don't plan on it. May make it and may not. I know a bunch of guy's that bought 5mm Rem Mag's and they still have a nice rifle, no ammo but a nice rifle!

If you don't handload, the .17 HMR is a nice varmit round.  (If you do, the .22 Hornet is much better -- and not much more expensive if you buy factory.)

I would not choose the .17 HMR as a small game round -- I find that even Winchester .22 LR hollowpoints are a bit more destructive than I like.

The .17 HMR isn't for everyone...and opinions vary wildly on the usefulness and ability of the little HMR.....

I have a Savage 93R17 BVSS in .17 HMR.  If your going to plink very much, I'd recommend the .22LR.  While there is plenty of .17 HMR ammunition available, there are only a few loads by one manufacture.  You have your choice of a 17 grain or a 20 grain.......I caught a sale on CCI 17 grain for 6.98 per box and bought 4 boxes......this isn't the rifles favorite load, but at that price, it's my favorite load....the rifle still shoots an inch at a hundred yards with this load....Walmart sells the ammo at $9 and change.......local gun shop has it for $11.95.....and this is for 50 rounds......As you can see.....a 500 pack from wally world of .22lr will cost about what 50 rounds of .17HMR is going to cost.

That said.....if ammo cost isn't a consideration........I'm really impressed by the accuracy of the .17 HMR.......I also love the flat trajectory and the reduced chance of richchet by the explosive 17 grain bullet........the 20 grain speer XTP doesn't appear to be as explosive and would be the load I'd choose for small game......I also like the Savage and Marlin rifles that the .17 comes in.......

After having done my own comparison between the .17 HMR and the .22 WMR I came to this conclusion.  If your dispatching pests and don’t care about meat loss then the .17 HMR is a great choice.  But if you are hunting for the pot then go with the .22 WMR.  Same goes for the .17 HR2 and the .22 lr.  Lawdog

i would highly recommend the 7000! ive had 3 and still got one on the simple principle of i only need 1. but every one of them was very accurate! my cousin has a decked out ruger 10-22, with over $600 in it,and i still beat him at 30 yards over and over .and ive beat plenty other ones 2. long story short 10 shots at 30 yards looks like one 45 hole!  not picky on shells, and i shoot the remington bulk pack mostly {$8.97 a box of 550} at walmart. ive had 2 different 17hmr's and i would get sick every time i bought shells. i would even buy the 17mach2 before the 17hmr cause the ballistics are close as far as nondrop out to 100yards, and shells are $5.97 a box instead of $10.97.let us know what you get! :D

What to get

If you want to eat those squirrels, use a .22 LR... or take only headshots with your .17 HMR and plan on putting a bunch of gory headless squirrels in your game bag. I agree with an earlier poster: I only use standard velocity target-grade solids for squirrels and cottontails and take 'em sitting in the head.

If you are shooting these critters for pest control purposes, then the .17 HMR or Mach II are undoubtedly the better choices. Which one you pick depends on your average range. Under 100 yards, go with the cheaper (and slower) Mach II because your target won't know the difference. Over 100 yards, choose the HMR because you'll get more hits at longer range.

I see the .22 LR as remaining the King of Rimfire Hunting Cartridges (my choice for squirrels and rabbits), the Mach II as being the Ultimate 100 Yard Varmint Stomper (my choice for starlings, pigeons, turtles, etc.), the .22 WMR as the Reigning Rimfire Powerhouse (my choice for larger critters), and the HMR as the Ultimate Rimfire Varmint Popper (my choice for deflating crows, starlings, and ground squirrels out to 200 yards).

My rimfire fantasy: to find a tree row where the starlings roost and with a hill for a backstop, get 150 yards away on a calm evening, and shoot starlings with my HMR until it gets too dark to see.

Did I ever mention that I HATE starlings?
