Target crown or wait till broken in?
« on: March 22, 2005, 04:38:35 PM »
Hi, everyone, been reading here a while and finally registered. As you can see by my sig, I have a Sportster in 17 HMR. I noticed that the muzzle doesn't seem to have a crown to it (at least none that I can see with the naked eye). There is a recess in the end of the muzzle but the actual opening (the bore) just seems to be cut off square. No burrs or uneveness, looks perfectly square to me.

I hope I described that well enough. Batteries for the digi cam are dead.

What I was wondering was would I get an accuracy improvement with an 11* target crown? Or should I just keep shooting it and see what happens after it's broken in? I have less than 100 rds through the rifle now.

And I don't have a good benchrest setup as of yet, so accuracy testing hasn't happened.

Thanks in advance,
Dale

A recut crown won't do you any good unless the original one was bad.  There's no magic in an 11deg. crown or any other for that matter. The only thing that matters is that it's cut even and smooth. Most target crowns are to protect the actual crown from damage. The edge right at the hole is the important area, the rest is mostly unimportant other than looks. This is just a longwinded way to say just shoot it and don't worry untill you have a problem.
