Charles Daly Actions
« on: December 28, 2004, 05:05:06 AM »
I been in into the handi rifles for awhile now and have realized there are just certain things you can't do with them. Even if you get one customized you end up spending more than you paid for the whole gun so whats the point.

I recently found a wildcat catridge i have took a liking to and want  to build the gun around this catridge.  I stumbled across the charles daly actions and i thought this would do the job since it is a tried and true action.......MAUSER..... but i still haven't heard much about them and was wondering if this is the way to go or do i need to be pointed in some other direction?

They are pretty "new" in the market.  Essentially they are commerical mausers built in Serbia.  Lots of unemployed but very skilled machinists in Serbia so labor is cheap, and lots of experience building quality rifles.  I have toyed with the idea of buying a barreled action and installing it in a richards stock.  I haven't heard much, but some on this board indicate they are a nice place to start, but need some finish work.

From what I've heard they should be good.  For the money though I went with a military (Turkish) action.  Not quite as nice, but money-wise it comes out cheaper.

CD Mauser action: $350

Military mauser action:$40
+$20 Scope safety
+$35 forged bolt
+$40 drill/tap
+$80 reblue
Total: $215, and in truth I'm having the receiver reblued with the barrel (ER Shaw), so that's something that I would have had to pay for with the Charles Daly anyways.  I also have a C&R so buying the Turk mauser as a project rifle saved me the transfer fees I'd have to pay on a Charles Daly action.

Now I'm also getting a lot of other "gizmos" for my project that drive the cost up (Huber Concepts skeletanized SS trigger, stronger sriker spring, lighter firing pin, engraved floorplate, etc), but those are all optional.

$350 for the CD action is a premium. You should be able to find one for far lees than that (if not, drop me a line and I can help). And if you put a trigger w/safety & bolt shroud to match the CD action, you've bumped the price of your military action another 75$. Then there's the triggerguard and floorplate!!! And most Turks have small ring threads (lg ring action w/sm ring threads), which limits the calibers that most 'smiths will fit. Don't get me wrong, the M98 Turkish actions are good cheap actions if you have the tools for the work yourself, but can quickly run into $$$ if hiring the work out.

As stated, the CD action is a little rough, but polishes very nice; in my opinion a great action to start an "economical" custom rifle project.

For $350 you can buy the whole darn field grade CD rifle including a synthetic stock at wally world.  I suspect you can do better than that on the action alone.

Or.... you could get a Remington 700 ADL from Wallyworld for $380.  Sell the barrel, stock, trigger on ebay.  You will with any luck at all end up with a new Rem 700 action for about $250-$280.  I am not a Remington fan but I don't see how you can beat this by much.

I would prefer a m70 action but i can't seem to find one. I like the safety one the m70 better than i do any other bolt rifle.  I one of these would be cheaper or actually just better than the CD action let me know. Like i said before i am relatively new to bolt guns, so any help you can provide me with will be greatly appreciated.

ER Shaw will do virtually any chambering for the Turkish 98 (they're custom making the barrel anyways).  You do run into problems if buying a pre-chambered barrel though (only ones I've seen available are 7x57, .257 Roberts, and 6.5x55SE).  I'm personally fine with the vertical swing safety so a new shroud really isn't all that interesting.  All in what you like though :).  Heck I might end up getting a CD Mauser action for a later project.  Sadly I once (about 2 years ago) sold an 03A3 that had been completely sporterized (bishop monte carlo stock, low safety, drill/tap, bolt forge, everything) for $150 because the barrel was shot out.  Man I was I had that thing back :(.

The Rem 700 action from Brownell's is $400.  You can buy the whole rifle, an ADL, from Walmart for $380.  Figure that one.

I just got in an order of CD actions, barreled actions etc and, for the price, I don`t think you can go wrong. Agreed they are metric thread and that may pose problems for some[not my lathe] but the cost of a barreled action being less than 300.00 in the door and EVEN a LEFT-HANDED to boot is VERY attractive. Sure you can get a Yugo for a song but by the time you add the adjustable trigger[40.00] drill and tap[40.00-min], alter the bolt[55.00], true and lap if needed[40.00], Rockwelling[55.00] you might as well have gotten the CD. Stronger too as there is no thumb-slot. Richards Micro-Fit has the new stock designs so stocks are out there too. As well, i have "heard" CD will be selling the stocks too. CHEAP!  Heck! A guy can get a complete CD rifle for well under 450.00. Not knocking the Yugos but time is money.

I had a 6.5x55 built for my ex-wife, while she was still a wife, and what I did was go to a gun show a buy a used Parker Hale 1200 for 200 dollars. Put on a 23" Shilen barrel, then had it re-bedded back in the Parker Hale stock. If memory serves me, that was a Mauser Supreme action. Made a super rifle. Sure do miss it!
