Sako Finnlight?
« on: February 28, 2005, 03:53:11 AM »
Does anyone have feedback on the Sako Finnlight rifles?  They sure feel and look good to me.  Sako is well know for accuracy and quality, but I haven't seen much feedback on the Finnlight rifles.  I have seen the bad press on the recalls, but from what I understand that should not be an issue now as it was the steel used on certain rifles and not the design or manufacturing process.

Suggestions on mount/rings?  I've not used the optilock rings and haven't seen any up close to check them out.  Any feedback or thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm considering one and this would be a good bit more than I usually invest in a rifle.

Thanks,
JCM

These are excellent rifles.  The recall affected only a small portion of Sakos and Tikkas with Stainless barrels.  Neither of mine were affected.  I must admit that I was very worried, but all is fine.

The only thing that I don't particularly like about the Finnlights is that their barrels are too short for me: 22" for magnums and 20" for standard cartridges.

Other than that, they are great.

Hi Zachery,

From Sako's website I think the barrels are a little longer than you listed, but sometimes webpage info may be a little off.

For the magnums and short magnums they list 24 3/8"

For short actions they list 20 1/4"

For long actions they list 20 7/8"

The link is:  http://www.sako.fi

I'm thinking maybe a 7mm-08 or 308.  Perhaps a 30-06.  I really have no need for a magnum and the barrel length on these should be fine for me.  I just don't want any of those in a length under 20"

Do you happen to know the length of pull that the Finnlights come with?

Thanks,
JCM

A friend bought one in 280 and it is a very nice rifle.  Very accurate right out of the box with factory ammo.  The barrel was longer than 20 inches, at least 22 maybe even 24.

I could have sworn that with Magnum cartridges it was in the 22" range rather than the 24" for the Finnlights.  I know that all other 75 Stainless rifles in magnums have 24"+ barrels.

Perhaps Sako is now putting longer barrels on their Magnum Finnlights?

My buddy (Big Tom) had one a year or so ago.  I think it was a magnum.  And I remember him saying that the barrel was around 22".  To me, that was the only fault that he found in it, but it bothered him enough that he traded it off.

Yea, that's what I thought.

Perhaps Sako put longer barrels on their Magnum Finnlights, but I really think that it is a typo in their website.  The Finnlights are generally 2" shorter than their 75SS counterparts.

BTW, I would go with the 7mm-08.  It's my favorite deer cartridge.

I am a huge Sako fan so I bought a Finnlight in a .308. What a mistake that was. Yes it was light and felt great, but the accuracy was horrific. It shot 2-3 inch groups at best after spending $150-$200 in ammo, and my brother's did the same. Needless to say, back to the store it went, and a new s/s 75 is now in it's place, with sub 1 inch groups right out of the box. I think that 20 inch barrel had a lot to do with it.
