Bad extractor
« on: January 13, 2005, 05:27:54 AM »
:sniper:
I have a 25/06 barrel that allows the cartridge to slip past the lip of the extractor.  This causes the brass to stay in the chamber and very difficult follow-up shots.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Do I need a new extractor or is there something underlying that is causing the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

I had the exact same thing happen to the same caliber barrel.  I sent it back to T/C.

There is a small pin on the block under the barrel that holds the extractor in.  Take this pin out (with a small punch) you will be able to slide the whole extractor out of that block. Be careful sliding it out because on top (barrel is the top) of this extractor is a very small piece of bent metal (bent like a smile) and this gives tension to the extractor.

You can bend this slightly to increase or decrease the pressure on the extractor. Your problem sounds like there isn't enough pressure.

If there is too much tension from the spring, the extractor will press into the cartridge with too much pressure and it will pull the cartridge out of the chamber, but then take some effort to pull the cartridge free from the extractor.

You mat need to bend the extracor itself just a tiny bit. I have had one that neede this to fix it. It was doing the same thing.   KN

:D Well I finally got the chance to try out the suggestion on this post about bending the extractor spring.  This worked great!! I simply tapped the retaining pin out, removed the extractor revealing the flat spring, and then I bent it little more and put it back together!!  The bullet can not slide by the extractor with out doing so, on purpose.  Thanks to all for your help and replies, it is appreciated.
