Considering a New Encore Barrel
« on: January 20, 2005, 09:15:30 AM »
Esteemed Posters...........

Early in 2004 I bought a 209x50 Encore. It was an upgrade from the Huntsman that I traded-in toward it. I put the 25 ACP breech plug in it. I hunted with it during ML season and put meat in the freezer. I really really like it!

I've had a Savage 111 in 7m-08 for several years and its also a good shooting rifle...Ugly as sin, but good shootin'.

I think I'm going to trade-in that Savage and use the $ to buy an Encore Barrel in 7M-08. I really like the 7m-08 round and I will not waiver on that for this bbl. It'll be my Deer rifle.

I'd appreciate any suggestions on: Stock vs custom bbls - including prices to expect, type of bbl people like (Bull vs std & lengths); and any other insights y'all may have.

Thanks.

I had a stock 7m-08 barrel 24".  It shot good with my reloads but did have quite a bit of recoil with anything over 120 gn bullets.  I put a Simms recoil pad on it and that helped considerably.  My buddy "Big Tom" has the same caliber only with a S.S 26" barrel from Fox.  Very nice and a good shooter.  We both also bought a Boyt laminated stock.  The extra weight also helped some with the recoil as compared to the synthetic stocks we both had.

Thanks for the post.

I've been reloading with the 140gr Nosler BT for my Savage. The recoil is acceptable....especially when I'm shooting my Marlin 1895 during the same range session.  :)

I'm going to head to my favorite gun shop and see what he'll give me for the Savage.
