Well I did it, got my 45-70 Handi yesterday and will order the Williams FP sight and Hornet front blade. Now, I need to start working on loads for this beauty. I'm planning a boar hunt in the fall and wonder if anyone can recommend a starting point for bullet weight and powder. Don't need to stop elephants, but this being a single shot, I want adequate knock down power in case I stumble across a monster. I'll be hunting in a heavy wooded area so ranges will be short. My assumption is less than 50 yards and probably a lot less. Another consideration is that I will more than likely remove the recoil pad from the stock. I need a shorter length of pull but don't want to cut the stock unless it's absolutely necessary. My thought was to install some sort of simple butt plate, maybe steel or brass. I think I can tolerate a fair amount of recoil, if not, then I'll cut the stock and reinstall the recoil pad. Thanks in advance for any input.
