custom barrels and hangers vs. factory barrels
« on: January 17, 2005, 05:58:49 PM »
Okay, fixing to take the T/C plunge, and saving the money for an E.A. Brown French Gray Pistol Encore Action, engraved.  Going to barrel it with the rifle barrel (want to be able to "legally" swith from pistol to rifle".  I'm enamored with the .338-06, but also looking hard at the .280 Remington.  I thought at first I could buy a set of Boyds Laminated Stocks and use both barrels, but as the .338-06 isn't cataloged I'm looking at a custom barrel.  So the question is, will one forend work for both or only for a factory barrel?  I'd rather have just one forend if I could.  Do the custom barrels only come with hangers, if so, why?  Can a person use a Boyds forearm and convert it to using a hanger so with 2 forearms that look the same you wouldn't know the difference?  I'm confused!!!!

Rockfish, cool thanks.  I was just wondering if there was a reason they were using hangers, (accuracy issue?), over the regular factory way.  I think I'll stay with the .280 as it is, I'm not a big fan of magnums, and the .280 will serve my needs for for lighter bullets.  Thanks.

The hanger bars are one way to "float" the barrel, as the hanger bar acts as a spacer between forearm and barrel, relieving pressure on the barrel as the barrel heats up from prolonged shooting.  Another way some people handle this is to add rubber washers between the factory forend and the barrel.  If this is primarily going to be a hunting rifle, in which most of your shots will be from a cold barrel, this may not be as much of an issue for you.  I see EA Brown is offering a checkering package for $25--are you having your stock checkered as well?  That will be a nice touch, I think.

I've thought about it, depends if I decide to buy the stocks early or not.  (Almost have enough money for the frame).  At any rate, the closeups of the hand checkering has a lot of overruns, they say this is because it is hand cut, but I'd rather not have a second rate checkering done, just doesn't add much to me, I might order them and if I don't like them send them back.  We'll see.  Thanks for the information.
