Recoil pad fit
« on: January 12, 2005, 02:12:11 PM »
I'm looking at limbsaver recoil pads and they show a prefit model for the Ultra Slug Hunter. I am wanting to put one on my 45-70 Handi and I was wondering if they share the same stock.  Wadda ya think?

I posted this in the shotgun forum but noone has replied in the 2 hours since I clicked "Submit".  Call me impatient.. :-D

Someone else asked that once before....none of the prefits will fit any handi stock, synthetic, wood or laminated, they are all too big or too small. The only one that works is the small grind to fit, #10541. I checked the template at the Sims web site against the part number #10003 at Eabco for the 988 slug hunter, it won't work, the screw holes are in the wrong place and it's not the same size as any handi stock.... :?

Here's the prefit #10003 template...doesn't match any of my stocks...

Haywire.

I would get the pad that you can grind down. The stocks on the two rifles I have, have no pitch. One I have already recut the other is still they way the way the factory shipped them.

Besides you would most likely have to cut the stock to allow for the thickness of the pad. That is the time to change the pitch.

Ok, thought I found an easy out... I'm no artist and grind to fit will probably end up "screw it on and make do"

thanks,

They're really not that hard to do, I've done only a couple. I used a regular shop grinding wheel on one, it came out pretty good for a laminated stock which doesn't need much grinding. Sims has complete instructions on their web site. A belt or disk sander would be best if you have one.

Haywood, You could box up your stock and pad and send it to me.  I'll do it for nothing and I'll ship it back to ya for nothing.  I owe you one.  I'll do it the same night that I get it and ship it out the next day.

Haywire: I am the dude that just ask, the #10541 IS correct!  It is also the BEST thing you can do for a .45-70, seriously THE BEST!

However, we must share identical mechanical ability 'cuz mine looks like $**t, BUT (the big butt) on this BUTT UGLY stock that came with mine it looks kinda OK.  In fact, this stock is so ugly (how ugly is it?) that during this bad weather streak we are having I may sand it and camo it!

Seriously, the Limb Saver is special.  I will be putting them on all my recoiling firearms.
Thanks and Gig''em

I bought one of the Sims recoil pads that was supposed to be pre-fit.  It wasn't.  But, even though I have a complete lack of mechanical and woodworking abilities, I tried to alter the stock to fit myself anyway.  Well, it worked, and the pad is on, but the stock looked really bad.  So, I did just what MarkA is thinking about...I camo'ed it and now it dosn't look to bad.  The main thing is that it really works well for recoil reduction.  If ever I want to change stocks, I can do that for a relatively inexpensive cost but next time I will get someone to install the pad for me.

Brownell's lists a recoil pad ( # 427-500-423 ) to fit H&R/NEF.   Does anyone know what it fits?  MC or Straight?

I betcha it isn't gonna fit em all and for $8.69 it's not gonna be any better than the OEM recoil pad which is probably all it is and certainly not in the limbsaver class. If you need an OEM pad, I bet there are a few to be had around here if you ask....

My Handi has a butt plate which I want to change to a pad to increase the LOP.  Recoil isn't any problem, it being a .223.

That's a very generous offer.   If you are sure, I'll send you an e-mail or  PM with an address.  Let me know what the postage is and I'll snailmail that to you.

Sure, if you think it will fit, it's off of a cinnamon laminated monte carlo stock which is a bit bigger than the standard laminated MC wood stock that measures 4½" long.

Last spring I called H&R and bought a recoil pad from them for my wife's shotgun.  I had to grind it to fit which really wasn't very hard, just takes a little time.  I would think they would have one that is close to the right fit for your .45-70. Why don't you give them a call and see.

To clarify.  H&R ships complete firearms to their stocking dealers in Canada, but won't ship parts or accessory barrels to individuals in Canada.  Unfortunately none of the dealers stocks parts.  H&R told me they plan to form a parts depot in Canada, but it hasn't happened yet.  Lots of red tape both sides of the border.  At least we can get the rifles.
