Hey all, I was just wondering if anybody here owns a 38-55 Classic target.  I'm considering getting one and was curious how well the throat is designed for cast lead bullets...?

Well lets get the actual name for the rifle down.  It is called The Buffalo Classic Target Model 38-55 WCF as taken from the first catalog hand out.

So, let me rephrase the question...

How well is the throat of the Buffalo Classic Target Model 38-55 WCF designed for cast lead bullets?

I'm wondering what degree angle the approach to the lands is cut.  My current cast lead bullet shooter has a 1deg (1/2deg per side) throat.  Anything above 3deg doesn't work as well with the breech-seated tapered bullets I'm using.

Thanks,

I don't know if anyone has used Cerrosafe Chamber Casting Alloy to actually check.

I do know it was designed for cast bullets... I personally would use a bore riding bullet and seat them 0.010" off the lands.  And depending on the application for short or long range I would probably use a bullet made by Montana Precision Swaging available at:
 Midway USA 38-55 WCF (.375-.377)

I hope this helps  :D

My Buff Classic had a very abrupt throat, almost no leade at all.  I had it rethroated.  I'm doing the same to my 22" Handi as well as having it checked for tight spots in the bore.

Gentlemen:
Using the Cerrosafe to determine chamber dimension, bore dia, throat. ect. the casting should indicate any problems and how to proceed. This would provide bullet dia. and seating depth. Am I correct? Is this good and proper procedure? Is this necessary or a good idea? Is this unecessary and splitting hairs, so to speak?
Using Cerrosafe sounds easy enough for even me to do. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would recommend against using Cerro-safe for determining bore diameter.  Cast your chamber with it, but use a soft lead slug for the bore diameter measurement.  Cerro-safe isn't soft like lead and it might be lots of fun to get out if you pour a couple inches of it in your bore.
What I did was slug the bore with the lead, then when I had that measurement, I drove it back in just a hair past the chamber to act as a stopper.  I then poured the Cerro-Safe on top of that to get a chamber casting.  It only engaged about 1/4 inch of rifling and was a breeze to tap out.
